Welcome my friends.

Welcome to Lee plays Morrowind take 2

I decided to give Morrowind another, more earnest attempt. My first attempted playthrough at this game ended it what I consider to be abject failure. I only made it maybe 2/3 quests into the fighter’s guild before getting my metaphorical shit kicked in left and right by persuasion checks, unwillingness to pay close attention to directions, and just overall not taking the game seriously enough. My utter boredom with my heavily armored warrior orc didn’t help things, so I decided to just start fresh with a completely new character.

I was told by YouTubers not to try a mage character on my first playthrough because things can get complex, but I just love battle mages too much and so fuck it: my second character is a mage. I’ll figure this shit out as I go.

My second character has overall been a much better experience than my first character. I think my extensive experience with mage characters in Skyrim has helped a lot with understanding my Morrowind mage, and I’m just having a lot more fun with the Mage than the Warrior.

Now I will spoiler tag my experience so far. I’m going to include some humor in this post but just know that I am enjoying Morrowind more on this second attempt. Let me know if these post interests you all and you would like to be tagged.

So why did I return to Morrowind?

I think it’s ultimately because the game did enough things right in my short time with my first character that I felt the need to dive in again with my second. The general idea of being an Imperial spy and having to establish a cover story by becoming an adventurer is so brilliant that it has consumed my thoughts for months now. I’ve also got a ton of recommended Morrowind stuff in my algorithms, and a lot of this game’s story and lore just seem so fucking cool. The idea of later in the game joining a Great House after having grown strong enough for them to take you seriously, the idea of your character almost being a self-fulfilling prophecy instead of being a literal born demigod like in Skyrim, everything about Dagoth Ur etc…Morrowind just kept screaming at me to return. And so I did.

And I’m having a lot more fun with the mage than the Warrior for a few reasons.

1. Morrowind’s combat sucks. I’m just going to say it. The idea that I’m only landing 40% of my melee attacks is abysmal. The idea that I’m not always successfully casting spells is cool in concept, and I’m sure later in the game where I’m pulling things off more successfully, the feeling of growth will be quite strong, but for now this shit sucks lol. I think it’s not as bad with the mage since I can summon aid via conjuration spells which seems to help break up the monotony of melee combat, but so far this is easily the worst part of the game for me. Warrior combat was simply unbearable. Mage combat through spell management and timing combat with my summons is much more tolerable.

2. I’m just more interested in mages, especially battle mages, that I am with warrior characters in games like this. To me, the pure warrior sucks, the mage is pretty cool, and the battle mage is godlike. There’s just something about the idea of a hybrid warrior mage that just goes so hard for me, and that’s what I’m going with with this character.

For this type of build, YouTube told me to pick a Dark Elf. Which works for me since I’ve never played a Dark Elf in TES actually, almost all of my characters in Skyrim were High Elves. So yeah it may be lame that I picked a Dark Elf to play in Dark Elf land, but my battle mage shall not be denied.

Role playing as a mage really forced me to slow down and pay closer attention to quest directions. Somehow, some way, I just knew my first mage guild quest would be “go collect some ingredients”, and sure enough they sent me on a fetch quest for shrooms. When I slowed down and really paid attention to where the quest told me to go and where to find those sweet sweet shrooms, shit just came together for me and I felt really satisfied when I found all four types of mushrooms without using the internet.

My second quest with the mages guild was something of a joke. I was told to go sabotage Gelbidir or whatever tf, and I immediately had reservations about doing it. I’m just some newbie with this guild, I told myself, who knows what kinds of enemies I will make by sabotaging a member who was here before me.

It turns out no one gave a shit, literally everyone in the guild, including the fucking victim, knew Ajira planned to sabotage him. What made me decide to go through with it was talking to the mage guild leader lol. She was like “yeah I did that shit all the time, you might as well do it.” Then I told the victim and they were like “yeah do it, whatever.” And I was like, okay I guess. Lol

A quest I thought was meant to test me ended up just feeling like a joke. Maybe there are some consequences/impacts that will come up later but for now, everything seems normal.

My third quest with the mages guild was an endurance gauntlet from the pits of hell itself.

“Go recruit this ex-Telvanni mage,” yeah I know what that means LOL-go miserably fail some persuasion checks and get your shit kicked in by a veteran mage. And apparently there’s a second mage I have to collect some debts for-fucking 2000 gold lol, why do I get the feeling my noob ass mage is about to get straight up educated by some veterans…

Just following the quest directions has been absolute carnage. First I get to a huge bridge inhabited by the strongest old man in Tamriel, summoning skeleton warriors left and right and peppering me with balls if lightning. Thankfully I picked up a conjure bone dude spell or whatever, and after successfully save scumming and reload spamming after only successfully casting this spell 45% of the time, I was finally able to send Scrooge to the grave where he belongs.

But little did I know my troubles were just beginning. The old man was just the gatekeeper to my real trial: getting gang-fucked by a bunch of scorpion pterodactyls while volcanic ash sprays in my face and obscures all vision further out that ten meters in front of me. During brief moments of respite where by the will of some divine comedy I actually manage to kill my flying enemies, I am immediately assaulted by netch hounds and slugs that can cast paralysis (TF???!!!)

And then there were the fucking spirit goblins that my sword didn’t even work on, forcing me to spam magic at them when I can’t even cast spells at a 100% success rate

This was all going quite poorly until I discovered my most powerful spell at the moment: Bound Dagger. I don’t know why this spell is as powerful as it is, but good lord. I first pulled this thing out from sheer desperation as my bone dude + scimitar spam combo was only good enough to 6 or 7 shot these giant flying demons from hell, and the first time my bound dagger three shot one of them with no assistance, I stood there with my mouth open just staring at this thing wondering why it was so powerful.

After discovering bound dagger, the enemies in this godforsaken cavern became somewhat trivial. I guess that’s games like this in a nutshell: hard until you learn them, and then you feel rewarded for actually learning something.

Anyway I took a break for today so I will post more later.

Yeah morrowind, from my memory (its been a long ass time i played it) is a very stat based game, like in alot of way like a Dragon Quest game if you familiar with those. Better equipment/acess to spells (also when it comes to convenience) makes an insane difference, so keep that in mind if you enjoy it and play in the future

Morrowind AKA Cliff Racer Slayer Simulator gush post, chapter 2

I cannot eat or sleep without Morrowind coming to mind. Beneath the dated textures, simplistic animations, and text-box story telling is one of the most unique and memorable fantasy worlds I have ever experienced.

The Dunmer and their entire culture, architecture, aesthetic, practices and way of life are seriously a SS tier fantasy race, it’s crazy how awesome these people are, Bethesda cooked hard as shit with this world, Skyrim cannot compare. I really wish we got an official HD remake of this game.

Morrowind’s gameplay continues to grow on me as I start whiffing less and less attacks and my character starts to grow more powerful. I really like how I’m not playing as a chosen one character right off the bat. When I first arrived in Vivec, I picked a fight with an Ordinator just to see how strong I was compared to standard Great House guard. Needless to say the Ordinator caved my skull in without too much trouble. Some dozen hours later I picked a fight with another Ordinator and killed it fairly quickly, so I tried picking a fight with two and got beaten to death in a short time.

In Skyrim the guards can be tanky for early/mid game characters, but they really don’t pose that big of a threat to your chosen demigod. In Morrowind I really feel like I’m just a small part of a larger world and have to find my place in it, every encounter with an enemy feels meaningful and like I could very well be picking a fight with someone stronger than me. I really appreciate this as it feels like I really need to grow stronger and progress my skills before the Great Houses would take my fledgling Dark Elf seriously. Especially when I walk into some random temple and come face to face with a Daedra in full Daedric armor standing there, Morrowind really makes you feel like a punk early on while Skyrim has the strongest warrior NPC’s wearing basic ass steal or leather armor.

Quest Design in Morrowind is good but definitely dated. The Ald Ruhn mages guild kept sending me across the whole ass continent to find some Dwemer ruin that was like 3 rooms big. “Find these plans” and they’re just resting on a table just past the front door. Or I travel to a town and they tell me bandits kidnapped one of their residents, so I spend 5 minutes walking up the hill and saving her from them, and the town is like “thanks, but your persuasion rating with us is still 35”. Morrowind being over 20 years old really shows in moments like this lol.

Overall I am definitely enjoying Morrowind but sort of regretting my caution in picking a light armor dark elf, I should have picked medium or heavy armor but I am told late game light armor is still quite strong. I just can’t get into light armor in TES.

Overall strongly enjoying Morrowind even past its dated elements.

Have tried playing this a bunch of times

Are you using any mods for up scaling textures/view distance?
I’m playing Vanilla on console because I hate myself
