I don't think I had to do it right away during day one and I didn't but it had to be at some point during day one. Not sure if it changes when the chosen 'liege' dies or I'm locked in until end of game

I think you should ask Fuji about it, it would be important to know if you can only protect one person for the rest of the game or someone else afterwards.

I think it is the opposite, a lot of them are currently barely participating so putting pressure on them with lynches could make them react more so we can read them better
