There was definitely a possibility of Oda going down the route of writing Luffy as the Yonko with his 3 top Commanders being themed Earth (Zoro), Sky (Sanji) and Sea (Jinbei), similar to the themes of the other Yonko.

However, that is merely a what-could-have been fanatsy. Let's live in reality. The seeds were already planted in Wano with Zoro and Sanji declared the Wings, and then fighting Calamities while Jinbe fights an exposition merchant Tobi Roppo. However, he appeared with Zoro and Sanji with Luffy to ward off Greenbull. He also had the whole bounty gag. So perhaps there was hope?
Then in Egghead, Zoro and Sanji clearly are the combat heavy duo. They get showings against Seraphim, beat Lucci, engage with Kizaru, have an interaction with Nusjuro etc. While Jinbei gets reduced to box moving. Not a good look.
Maybe he can salvage his rep in Elbaph. Oh boy. Oda finishes the Jinbei agenda. Oda very clearly in Elbaph emphasised that Luffy is not a mere Yonko. The Pirate King crew structure is different. It is not just a Top dog and 3 top commanders. It is a Captain and 2 Legendary Figures alongside him, the Right Hand Man and Left Hand Man, The Wings who stand shoulder with shoulder with the Captain and are Supreme Kings themselves. The Wings are also significantly stronger than the others on the crew, as stated by the Giants. Zoro and Sanji in the Underworld, unlocking/mastering Conquerors, fighting Holy Knights. Jinbei is not even getting a fight.
So yeah, Oda has officially screwed Jinbei forever. His ceiling is extreme diffing EOS Franky while Zoro and Sanji gain every haki/black blade/black flame/science upgrade Oda can possibly give them since they will need to be Legendary Supreme Kings who stand shoulder to shoulder with Luffy and will be significantly stronger than the other Straw Hats.

Yes, because eos Sanji would be a stronger Gaban even if he is old. It can give a picture how well Sanji could do against Imu. For example if Imu swatts him like a fly then rip even eos sanji wouldnt stand a chance. But if Gaban can stand his ground, take a few hits like loki and even manage to make imu bleed. Then bravo, EoS Sanji would get the benefit of doubt that he would do better. However EoS Sanji defeating imu, is a hard no.
No it didnt, Wano really shown the gap between Luffy and his wings clearer and clearer. G5 luffy is on another level. That why Oda is going with the wings label going forward.
