If Imu knows extremely specific information about Luffy, Ace, and Sabo when they were still children, it makes little sense for Imu to not recognize Gaban, especially considering Gaban’s fame and importance in the Roger Pirates, alongside Rayleigh (pirate wings)...

something doesn't make sense here..probably oda dropped that detail on purpose..

It is yes odd. Personally i thought Oda wanted to convey Imu has very little to care about Pirates and only thing that mattered to him was D clan.

Naturally if one has been living on for 1000 years, one would care very little of events happening.

But as Roger was able to read Joyboy last words/story, Imu should've been concerned more with Roger pirates than Oda has let on. Especially since Imu also knew of Sabo, Ace and Luffy (which could also be because Sabo has infiltrated and witnessed the throne).​

The Gorosei are the ones who actually run the WG and would recognize Gaban at first sight. Imu's just a lazy ass shut-in who plays with butterflies.
