Not necessarily an unpopular opinion — I mean something where you genuinely think the majority of the fandom is looking at it the wrong way.

For me, it’s the idea that a character needs to be insanely strong to be considered important to the story. Some of the most impactful characters in One Piece aren’t even close to the top tiers in strength.

I'm probably the biggest defensor of the story and you will not even see me defend this. The sexualization in the manga industry (but japan overall) is a problem that must be denounced and that is indeed the one thing that Oda should stop.

This is a valid critic.

This has been normalised in Japan. Something wrong with the society as whole.
It's not just one piece but nearly every Manga/Shounen has some form sexualisation of underage girl, mostly high school girls.

Heightscaling or at least the logic behind it.

Basically it's about patterns more than anything else. The ___ cm difference is otherwise meaningless.

But if there's a consistent pattern in other regards as well then it's the best way to gauge relative character strength.

E.g Most see Admiral ranking as Akainu or Akainu/Kuzan> the rest. For me though it's Akainu>=Kizaru>=Kuzan, because there is a very strong pattern between these three which features Kizaru as the #2 in height and other aspects both pre and post TS.

Fuji and Ryokugyu have different patterns of their own which have nothing to do with height

Hence bizarre takes like 3 Admirals = 1 Emperor based on the logic of "otherwise the Yonko system would not exist".

Which is completely silly because in context we know the Gorosei saw the Three Powers as fundamentally important for a long time, we know that all factions have armies, territories etc that matter a ton in these discussions.

The BoP is something that the WG depends on to achieve world balance

This BoP is something the Gorosei try to preserve and protect, as any chaos that ensues can lead to the rise of even more ambitious individuals

People like Roger are dangerous, because they're not only strong enough but also ambitious.
Someone like Whitebeard is benign because he has no interest in the throne
Kaido and Linlin were idle, which is why Gorosei didn't want to anger Kaido and create chaos
Shanks is powerful but he is not after the throne, so the Gorosei don't care
This is how their thought process works

Navy and Warlords ally to counter Yonko and create balance
This doesn't actually mean Navy + Warlords = 4 Yonko in a powerlevel sense. The presense, influence, and role each power plays is what creates BoP

The warlords are not chosen for strength, but influence. Why is that?

Because their job is to keep the weakling pirates in check and strike fear in rising pirates

Did people actually believe characters like Moria, Jinbe or Crocodile can shift the balance of an equation that includes the likes of
Admirals, Yonko, Garp, Sengoku or Mihawk

I don't really agree with most things people said here. They're not really arguing against what the community already believes.

For example, one of the beliefs people should be challenging is stuff like Blackbeard's plan being to have all the best Devil Fruits and therefore he needs the fruit Imu has too. All of that could be wrong, but pretty much the entire community believes it's a fact that it's going to happen.

Those are the kinds of things the OP wanted us to discuss, and not just surface level stuff like "everybody thinks Oda is a God but he's actually a fraud!" Saying this kind of thing just makes you look stupid.

1) The belief that Imu created the Devil Fruits.
- This might be true if Imu was "The Devil" and the Devil Fruits were originally called Devil Fruits. However, I don't believe they were. Instead, they were called Dream Fruits.

2) The belief that the Red Line must be destroyed to create the All Blue.
- This might be true if the world operated on physics alone, but because it operates on metaphysics there is a chance it has a metaphysical access point rather than a physical one. In other words, the "blow up the Red Line" idea is a physical solution to a metaphysical problem = it doesn't work.
