I've spent a lot of time thinking about this, and, I would not be surprised if the original Vinsmoke Family was actually good/morally gray.
We have little to NO information about this family. Even what we know about Germa 66, with their infamous 66 day reign of the North Blue, is just bits and pieces.
It's easy to assume who stopped Germa 66: the WG. However, even in this case... despite knowing Judge is an asshole, we have NOTHING about the original Germa 66. Not even a name.
Not a single Romeo to be seen.
At this point, Sanji is viewing the name solely through the lens of his asshat father, Judge. Sanji knows nothing about the name's origins/the true history of the Germa, at least as far as we know, and, anything he did learn would have come from Judge himself, who we know is not a trustworthy individual.
The fact that Sanji is a dude who can magically produce fire, and his ancestral name has "smoke" in it seems to be more than a coincidence to me. Could Sanji's ancestors also produce flames, hence Vin-"smoke"?
I would not be surprised if Germa's tale is like that of Esperia: the WG wanted slaves/territory, and, rather than give them it, the Vinsmoke family decided to unite the North Blue in war against the WG. They held out for 66 days, and then lost.
I think the Vinsmoke were the good guys.
The 66 is part of Sanji: his eyebrows are literally 6s.
I think Sanji will learn the truth, and retake the name Vinsmoke. I think the coolest shit would be if Sanji beat Judge, and told Judge straight up "Don't use our Family's name. You're not a Vinsmoke, and you don't represent the Germa, our proud ancestors: you're just an evil fool. That's all you are, Judge. You're not a Vinsmoke, and you're certainly not my father. You've stolen enough from me. I'm taking my name back, and I don't want to ever here you call yourself 'Vinsmoke' again."
Just lay the salt in the wound and then set the wound on fire.
Something to note in Elbaph is we have yet to see a dedicated graveyard. I believe that Elbaph's burial sites are sacred, and only true allies of the country can enter them. Once we do, I think we'll find an Ancient gravesite full of Giant Ladies all wed to a single "Vinsmoke Rome" and Sanji will lose his shit realizing his ancestor was swimming in giant mammaries.
