By the standards of the genre, a solid 9.

Sanji was introduced in chapter 43.

The payoff for what we're seeing started in chapter 56.

Even independent of his personal storyline, Sanji benefits from being the #2 most plot relevant Strawhat. You can ignore WCI entirely, and he's still critical to the Emperor Saga.

Peaked at Enies Lobby.

He came out of timeskip sniffing Perona's ass and dying to a nosebleed before betraying his captain and getting cucked by pudding. I legitimately liked him pre skip but he turned into a pathetic, insecure mess. A lot of the time he holds the crew back more than he helps; aside from nosebleeds let's not forget him walking straight into Black Maria's trap and begging to be saved, meanwhile Chopper is curing an entire population and Zoro is holding back two Yonkos on the roof.

He refused to poison big mom's cake which is even worse when you consider it was he that put them in such a bad position in the first place.

His dream is a bit of a joke because he doesn't even know if all blue exists and it is almost never mentioned as something he is actively pursuing. We can see Luffy going for one piece, we can see Zoro training to be a great swordsman, Nami is always making maps, chopper is getting better at medicine. Sanji does absolutely nothing to advance his dream, he doesn't even improve at cooking because the way it is written is as though he is already the greatest chef so when it comes to cooking he is just a Mary Sue.

He has also been willing to drop that dream multiple times for basically nothing. His role on the ship has been shown to be easily replaceable, Oda had to make Luffy so stupid to eat a raw poisonous fish to justify the importance of a cook but even then it was shown that Nami could replace him with zero effort and the rest of the crew can survive just fine on Wano without him.

So a badly incorporated dream, hurting the crew almost as often as he helps, his role being the most replaceable on the crew. He really isn't written that well. 4/10 for nostalgia, at least pre skip he was somewhat cool.

Lol damn.

Well Oda stumbled on the "holding back" part, because we're now supposed to treat it as a revelation that his well being is ostensibly the well being of his crew. I actually find the Black Maria thing easier to accept than the mistake he made with Khalifa, but it should be obvious how difficult any of the gags make it when Oda plays it straight.

The shit eating grin when it came to the cake, I'm also fine with. Being a cook is the foundation of his character and it's like Oda generalized his no-kill policy to this matter. Like maybe the poison wouldn't do anything, but having the best cake on the planet then not being able to get it back... that's the worst for Linlin in a troll way

Why only 6/7. Practically no other shounen-action characters have the same depth Oda gave to Sanji.
Killua and Kurapika (HxH), Eren (AoT), Rudo, Enjin, Riyo (Gachiakuta), Roy Mustang (FMA), L and Light Yagami (Death Note), the main JoJos are all better written characters than Sanji. And that's only the main casts, excluding the villains and side characters from other shounen.

You're one of the biggest Sanji bro, what I request is for you to list a lot of things Sanji and compare it to those other better written character.

For example : Sanji has a "curse" & jinx related to him (cigarette). Sanji has a complete life history.
