Loki didn't take an "L" at all.
He genuinely fought against three of Imu's forms, ultimately forcing Imu to resort to yet another form.
Don't forget, we were dealing with a Loki who had returned from the dead; even though he was wounded by Imu multiple times, he kept resisting—to the point that Imu needed a new form to defeat him.
