It's very hard to compare Berserk with LOTR. They are different mediums, genres, and styles. Also, they were created in different eras, with completely different contexts and for different audiences.

We can't judge a manga with the same standards we would judge a book, and vice versa. Not to mention that Berserk isn't even finished, so we don't know its full quality.

With all that said, Berserk isn't in the same league as LOTR or many classics of literature. I really like Berserk, and there are many good things I can say about it. Miura was an outstanding mangaka.

However, Tolkien essentially created the modern epic fantasy genre, inspiring hundreds of other works, his writings have been adapted into some of the most acclaimed films ever made, and his worldbuilding is on a scale that no manga can match. Berserk is good, but not THAT good.
