Yeah, the majority of Naruto fanfics I read feature Itachi as a major character, and after that I read Uchiha stuff more generally. I have only read a few Naruto fics for Naruto himself, and all of them featured a different Naruto than in canon.

Nah. Even filtering out romance entirely, Naruto has a lot more. I guess it's some combination of the world being well established and the characters being very compelling? Naruto has a lot more fanfiction than most other manga, so there's something about it in particular that makes it so attractive to fanfic writers.
