Take Christopher Columbus for example, he was associated with slave trade which is a horrendous horrendous thing to do, one of the most evil things that our history is associated with. But that doesn't mean I won't give him credit for discovering Americas and impact it had on the world.

For example Jews are ~ 2% of the American population but ~ 20% of Nobel prize winners. For this and similar reasons, I consider the Holocaust especially bad.
