In a bit of exposition, we get Oden's life story told to us in the form of debrief to Kozuki Sukiyaki. Oden is quite akin to Linlin in that he is a naturally born monster with lots of potential. And he realizes it quite early. Accomplishing many inhuman acts, both literally and metaphorically. His reputation is quite mixed all over Wano. Many gathering preconceived notions about the man through rumors and recounts.

Many which are missing necessary context. For instance, Oden boils, well, Oden over the remains of a father and grandfather in broad daylight. Reminiscent to Oda Nobunaga who defiled the grave of his father. However, Oden's intentions are implied to be nobler than they appeared. Apparently bidding farewell to his dead friend in a way that is only privy to them.

We get a look at Kin'emon and Denjiro at their earliest point. Both are delinquents, likely orphans, working as urchins for the underworld. Kin'emon is on a destructive path, with only his childhood friend, Tsuru, as support. Denjiro is a shrewd lad, and seemingly a good judge of character as he is instantly enamored with Oden. I'm not too fond of this. Denjiro's early characterization is quite flat-

-when you compare him to his obvious counterpart, Kin'emon. Kin'emon is the shining figure in these early flashback chapters. We fully understand where he started and why he loves Oden. He benefits from having established ties outside of Oden, being Tsuru. That's because it helps contextualize his growth as a man.

For the overall feel of the flashback, it seems a touch more comedic than the typical One Piece flashback. Every flashback has it's funny moments, it's One Piece. But this flashback appears a touch self aware. The adulation Oden receives is so over the top, that it's poked fun at on several instances. I wonder if this is Oda having fun with the fact he is basing Wano's structure on dramatic theater-
