However, Inoue felt after the Sannoh match that there was no way he was going to draw a more exciting match. So he decided to end it. Shueisha tried to get him to continue because SD was selling as much as Dragonball but he refused.

Of course I wanted to see the series continue, I loved the characters. But when the author feels like he won't be able to top what he already did, it's time to end it unfortunately. Rukawa was never going to return Haruko's love. He's 100% obsessed with being the best BB player he has no room for romance. Haruko was never going to love Sakuragi because she's in love with Rukawa

Hanamichi's moment against Sannoh when he tells her "I love basketball and this time I'm not lying" was basically the end of his character arc. From delinquent who lied about loving basketball to a true sportsman.
