dizzy2341Lmaooo @Den_Den_Mushi That's poor lol. I guess the rise of technology has only really served as a distraction rather than a facilitator.
Den_Den_MushiMaybe our education system just sucks balls lmao. You try to teach a bunch of 15yo blokes Wuthering Heights, they gonna switch off man. I think students just don't see the value of learning literature, but I reckon they'd be more interested if they had something like a philosophy/critical thinking/society and culture unit instead. It's just... hard to get guys interested in shit like Romeo and Juliet.
@Den_Den_Mushi They were lol. Catherine's mom was Hareton's aunt.
Romanticism huh, I also didn't quite like it lol. We covered Frankenstein there for some reason so it was a bit better, and Blake and Swift were interesting, besides that it mostly sucks.
Den_Den_MushiYeah it is, pity no high schools offer it in my state. Philosophy and literature aren't really well-regarded here, especially for blokes. Most of my students are guys so I understand their dislike towards literature, but even my female students nowadays are completely switched off. I had two 15yo girls who didn't know what 'vast' or 'pedestal' meant.
Light D LamperougePhilosophy is really interesting, I remember when we studied about it, and how they had their ideas of what the world was made of. I was blown away by it.
> I had two 15yo girls who didn't know what 'vast' or 'pedestal' meant.
Woah man, yikes.
Den_Den_MushiPhilosophy is very interesting, as part of my law degree we had to do a philosophy of law course covering names like Plato, Kant, Adorno etc and their views on law and justice. One of the best subjects I ever took.
Yeah, the other day, one of my A levels students didn't know what 'imp' meant, and when I suggested that he use the word 'poignant' in his essay, another student looked at me like I'd grown an extra head.
Den_Den_MushiPart of me likes Plato’s utopian thinking and the way he wrote The Republic but I also like Adorno’s takes on mass media and consumerism. Hegel is basically a hot mess for me. I didn’t get much of it xD.
You?
Light D Lamperouge> Yeah, the other day, one of my A levels students didn't know what 'imp' meant, and when I suggested that he use the word 'poignant' in his essay, another student looked at me like I'd grown an extra head.
Yikes, good luck with that.
Plato is interesting, I liked his "Allegory of the Cave"
Nietzsche and Swift also have their appeal, to an extent tho.
dizzy2341Plato's theory is interesting, and I like the fact that he kinda accepts himself that his theory of forms is BS
Den_Den_MushiIdk what to do lol. Maybe I’m the one who’s out of touch but I can’t seem to connect with Gen Z. We’re not on the same wavelength at all.
The cave has always appealed to me for some reason, as have ideas about utopia. I mean utopia symbolises our eternal desire to do and be better. It’s really interesting.
Light D LamperougeI forgot Machiavelli, the man was a genius. Just read "The Prince", it's marvelous. He could have been an evil genius of the highest order lol.
Speaking of Utopia, did you all ever read Thomas More's "Utopia"?
Oh and while we are there, Bacon was interesting as well, I really liked his "New Atlantis".
Den_Den_MushiAll this stuff is shit I gotta read *sweats* my reading list is getting too long. I’ve heard good things about Bacon tho.
Tbh my list is full of sociology/psychology/game theory ish books, gotta clear space for some philosophy
Light D LamperougeI didn't know there were literary aficionados here, who are also interested in philosophy. A thread where we can talk more about it should be made imo.
Den_Den_MushiWe should ^^ Tbh it’s nice to find a place where I’m not the nerdiest person in the room.
Den_Den_MushiI’m also not sure and it’s like 4am for me so I should sleep soon xD. But we definitely should make such a thread, I’ll have a look at the other sections tomorrow or sth.
