I should put a disclaimer that I haven't actually played New Vegas (or any other games) for a decade and when I did play it, I was a young teen. So there is admittedly room for nostalgia bias. Lol.
Anyway, New Vegas is pretty much the golden goose of the Fallout franchise, especially of the modern games. It's the only Fallout game that has a rabidly loyal, enduring fanbase that still produces content to this day.

Of the modern games, Fallout 3 was the experimental prototype that brought the franchise out of obscurity and into the modern age.

Fallout: New Vegas was the formula perfected and is the strongest of the modern Fallout games, especially in the story telling department.
Fallout: New Vegas is pretty much my favourite game (out of an admittedly limited range).
