Light is also a master manipulator, manipulating Rem, Ryuk, Misa, his family, the newscaster chick etc.
Plus, Near said that together he and Mello were able to surpass their mentor L by beating Light.
Light does tend to make more stupid emotional mistakes though, like killing Lind L Tailor.
