I was thinking you could maybe get notifications when someone you follow posts a thread or something but right now i don't see any benefit from using it :V

The "News feed" option shows the recent activity streams of those you follow.

I don't use it as much nowadays (I'm way more passionate about ToG than OP right now), but it's been very helpful to me in the past.
