CineraThere was real strength of moral fibre there.
Den_Den_MushiIdk if you’ve read my Iris series but one of the characters tends to pity herself and shy away from fights. Doesn’t mean she’s not a good character, or that she’s not strong in other ways. She doesn’t have to be all TATAKAE TATAKAE like what Yamato was, and in fact it doesn’t really add anything to her for me.
CineraI don't think Oda failed at depicting Yamato as someone who's strong both in personality and as a combatant.
CineraWhat Komurasaki did where she slapped Orochi, that was an example of Oda depicting strength of character from someone that was physically weak.
Den_Den_MushiYou can’t really compare Yamato and Nami in this chapter. Yamato has known Luffy for a matter of hours. Nami is one of his first nakama, he is the person who saved her from utter despair in Arlong Park and he’s the reason her sister and village were freed from slavery. Nami collapsing from grief makes her human, not some shonen-esque battle boss bitch and I actually love to see her react in that way.
Den_Den_MushiI’m saying that Yamato is a StRonK fEmALe character in the same way some people interpret Rey from Star Wars. She doesn’t connect emotionally with me and has been spoonfed so many broken and overloaded powers that it detracts from her character. Mythical zoan that coincidentally comes with elemental powers, advanced CoC but somehow without even learning Adv CoA? Yeah nah miss me with that.
Den_Den_MushiYamato kind of falls into this one dimensional shtick where she just goes ‘fight fight fight I am Oden fighto fighto’. She could be so much more but she just isn’t. Shang Chi is a great example of a character going against their father that’s complex, connects with the audience and isn’t overpowered, or at the very least he earns his powerups on screen.
B
Ballel@Den_Den_Mushi Well, OnePiece IS a shonen series and I appreciate that Oda was actually capable of writing a female warrior character at all.
Den_Den_Mushi@solis i don’t think being a shonen is an excuse for having standards that low. Plenty of shonen from decades ago like Code Geass have complex female characters, both civilians and fighters alike. I’m not content with just the stRonK female character whose actual character revolves around wanting to be someone else.
B
Ballel@Den_Den_Mushi while I understan you point about Oda's characters' lack of realistic personalities I disagree on the 'someone else's part.
'Oden' is a role, like 'joyboy', like 'the next Ryuma' etc.
In this recent chapter Yamato showed that she doesn't just want to be the same as Oden.
Oden decided to lay low and make a fool out of himself in hopes that it would save his citizens.
1/2
B
BallelYamato, on the other hand, understands that surrender is no option and won't lead to anything.
She is neither as naive as Oden was not dies.she have his massive ego.
Oden wanted to be the only one dying and sacrificing himself.
Yamato wants to die together with the others.
That's a pretty good way of Oda to show that she is indeed her own person. 2/2
Den_Den_MushiI disagree with all of that. You can’t give Yamatrash the benefit of saying she’s less naive than Oden when she literally has the advantage of his journal which explicitly tells her that Kaido won’t keep his word. There is literally nothing other than fight or die if you’ve so much as heard Oden’s story. It’s not proof that she’s her own person at all.
B
BallelKeep hating her then¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Den_Den_MushiAlso I don’t buy the whole Oden being symbolic thing. As I’ve said many times, if she really thought of him symbolically, she wouldn’t have said Momo was her son. That scene disproves the entire argument, also the fact that she’s been acting this way since she was 8. An 8 year old thinks literally, not metaphorically.
Den_Den_MushiI mean you don’t really seem to have any convincing arguments to the contrary.
B
Ballel"if she really thought of him symbolically, she wouldn’t have said Momo was her son."
This was her still trying to find her own way.
"An 8 year old thinks literally, not metaphorically." This is an assumption.
Den_Den_MushiRight, so she’s kept on saying she’s Oden, but proved that she’s retarded and delusional. There is no ‘finding one’s way’ that relies upon pretending to be a dead dude in front of his son
B
Ballel"so she’s kept on saying she’s Oden, but proved that she’s retarded and delusional."
This sentence has no logic.
"There is no ‘finding one’s way’ that relies upon pretending to be a dead dude in front of his son"
You keep using the same arguments.
I get it, you hate Yamato's character and that's fully ok. This is your preference.
But don't act like there is any logic in it, it's simply based on your emotions.
Den_Den_MushiAs in she’s been saying the same thing over and over again, but proved that she meant it in the retarded, delusional sense. Not the symbolic way that her fans like to claim. Where is the proof that suddenly after 20 years she’s suddenly attained the brain cells to behave like a human being?
B
Ballel"proved that she meant it in the retarded, delusional sense"
Where is the proof tho?
