I meant the kind of songs sung by that artist.

I mean music is universal in the sense that you can relate to good (background) music and beats.

But back then in Indian music a lot of emphasis was given to lyrics and the way a singer delivered those lyrics.

I mean that was just me assuming that you've never ever heard of any subcontinental music, maybe you already have.

So I meant a "disconnect" in that sense.

@Bounty Ah, I get what you mean.
I don't understand a word of what he's singing😅
But I just love this singing style, it carries so much emotion.

It is said that music unites people and is universal but I think it can divide too.
Especially different voice/singing styles can be very divisive.

bounty is right in saying so

I dare say solis might even find it somewhat cringe if its his first time

@Bounty @AL sama
I get what you mean.
Many people don't even try to appreciate singing styles apart of their own cultural sphere.
And some westerners in particular can be VEEERY sensitive to singing styles from, like, anywhere to the east(from west European perspective).
They will say Indian, Arabic, Turkish etc music all sounds the same, that the singers can't sing because they have a "shaking voice" or whatever

@solis listen to this https://youtu.be/bkFv5ybbwW0

I guess yeah, the one relatable aspect of his singing is putting all of his soul into the song and the way he expresses certain words.

Yes, singing style is the most divisive part in all of this. But I'm sure even then Rafi's songs have the capacity to attract anyone one way or the other

@AL sama good to see you understood where I was coming from lol

@solis In that context I feel so lucky to have enjoyed and experienced the best of both the worlds.

I think it's just too much of a cultural disconnect from the west which probably doesn't make them realize the nuances behind those songs and why they sound the way they do from the context of the cultures they stem from.

Ballel
@Bounty Well, the average westerner would cringe at like 50% of the music I listen to, sooo

@AL sama Oh God

The variation he brings in with every word, especially the way he says "mohabbat" differently at every instance.

If someone just listens to the singing for what it is, it's out of the world

@solis I've done my best to post translations to those songs. But the nuance and magic carried by Urdu/Hindi in those songs is something which can only be understood when you know it 😭

and it's not even really the romance, but how each of those words are expressed (based on the meaning/mood) each one of it carries.

@Bounty Yes, languages can never be translated 1 to 1. Many things will get lost, especially culturally significant references.
Even between languages as close as German and English there are some untranslatables.

And this is why humankind needs all of these languages.
Each language and culture has its own way to look at and interpret the world, its beauty and its pain.

I wouldn't bore both of you too much. But Md Rafi is really close to me and I'm only able discuss with a select few about him.

So this thread is probably one of the most precious moments for me on this forum so far, cannot thank you guys enough.

and @solis I can sense your passion in just trying out new music, what I would do to magically equip you with everything you need to enjoy this to the fullest 😇
