- His misunderstading on Kanki's aim, which actually wasn't to "give up on survival and just cause as much damage as possible". Thus, Kanki saw through him.

I think this is a great example of Kanki perfectly understanding and using the situation that the state of Zhao is currently going through (and Riboku's concerns) and combing with his own feared history of slaughters - with Riboku also believing he'll do that again and has that he has given up on life.

All this factors, and he's able to trap Riboku like that.

Yeah, Kanki really got into his head and made him desperate. It's important to remember that all these mistakes were made largely because of the burning forest. He had no choice but to believe the report that Hika was already getting sieged. I wonder if it weren't for that false report, Riboku would have felt something amiss, and perhaps organized his forces in a way that wouldn't fall prey easily to the ambush.
