Meme at least had a good flashback and build up. Oden's build up was almost entirely wank upon wank. Which was made even worse when he was revealed to be beyond a joke

1. Oden's character is unoriginal. Just another Franky, misunderstood thug, pervert, yada yada... Fine whatever, not atrocious, but not good either

2. His relationship with his scabbards and his own family was so poorly developed it was laughable. It was as if they we were simply told "These characters are supposed to care for each other". Yet Oden acts like they're just some fan boys or something.

Their relationship couldn't be more bare bones if Oda tried.

3. His stupidity is beyond the realms of believable in the slightest. OP characters are dumb. Very dumb. But this was something else entirely

4. His entire legacy makes absolutely no sense. He's treated like some hero that saved Wano, dies smiling despite all the terrors that would befall his country.

Country is ruled by someone actively aiming to destroy it, daughter becomes a prostitute, son has assassins after him, wife is murdered, "beloved" scabbards had a traitor amongst them, 20 years of misery for the entire country and its people. Yet he is praised as some sort of legend, despite dooming the country with his stupidity even though he was the one that could've saved it
Cinera

Fair enough. I think his stupidity was mainly naivete and trusting people (Kaido and Orochi) that hadn't done anything to earn that trust.

His journey could've been spun in a way that the tragedy of Wano happened solely because Oden was away and went on a journey with Roger. But there were so many opportunities to fix things. Let's not even get into the frequent BS involving his character. Nonsense like him randomly having his swords when confined in a prison. Or Shinobu being set free simply because Oden said "WhO iS tHiS wOmAn".
Cinera
Cinera
He was also unwilling to risk the lives of a few thousand people in an all out war with Kaido (that would have ultimately been the lesser cost in lives than what was ultimately paid).
D
dizzy2341
Despite the fact that she'd clearly been seen fighting alongside Oden. The whole thing and Oden specifically was a car crash on another level
Cinera
Cinera
He was hailed as a legend/hero because of the sacrifice(s) he made for the country. That he could have done much better than what he actually did never really entered the discussion at all.
Cinera
Cinera
It's not like the Wano people have access to all the information we have. They didn't know that had Oden being more resolved, he could have waged and won a war to drive out Kaido and Orochi.

A war literally broke out in Wano whilst Oden was naked twerking in the streets for change. There was literally a war going on between Moriah and Kaido right there in Wano already...Not only did Oden not capitalise on the opportunity, but he gave zero fucks about the citizens that had a war between a warlord and an emperor break out in the middle of their country
Cinera
Cinera
They don't blame him for the counterfactual future where he acted more appropriately and won that was denied to them.

That's a normal reaction I think. We don't normally blame the heroes for failing to depose the villains but respect their sacrifices anyway.
Cinera
Cinera
Kanjuro being a spy was totally out of left field, and I'm not sure how to feel about that, but there's not really anything Oden could have done about it.
Cinera
Cinera
Regarding the war, not capitalising on it was I'll advised, but every week Oden danced he saved 100 additional people. By the time the war broke out, he had already been dancing for several months, and Orochi and Kaido had upheld their end of the bargain so far.
Cinera
Cinera
Oden did act when Orochi broke his bargain by murdering Hyougoro's family and retainers.

His actions were just doomed to failure due to the spy.

That's not the same situation. The situation would be if Mike (a policeman) gives a flamethrower to Jim (a known arsonist). Jim sets a neighbourhood on fire. Mike gets the people out of their homes, and dances in the streets for hours as their houses burn down and the smoke chokes them outside anyways. Someone eventually dies from the smoke.
Cinera
Cinera
I do understand your annoyance with him.

THEN Mike gets a single fire extinguisher and tries to put out the entire neighbourhood blaze. Only to fail and die in the process with a smile on his face as the people cheer his name. You realise how retarded that is?
Cinera
Cinera
Well the people of Wano didn't blame Oden for starting the fire. They didn't know anything that would cause them to view it as his fault.

In this case Mike shares a large part of the blame due to giving the arsonist the flame thrower.

'Let's entrust this country to a suicidal maniac and a dude who actively hates Wano!'
This is the worst part of Oden for me. He should not be hailed as any kind of inspirational figure but deservedly hated for allowing his country to be ruined.
