Yes he does. Smoker and Kuzan have a previously established relationship. Smoker even mentioned hearing the rumors about Kuzan. Smoker is also the only marine Luffy has actively fought alongside throughout the entirety of one piece and is one of the only marines Luffy has fought but never beat. Again, Oda could’ve had Coby clash with Kuzan if he wanted to set that up. But he didn’t.

Coby could’ve had that same parallel with kuzan for say kuzan attempted to use ice to flash freeze the ship.
Oda specifically had it be against Pizarro for a reason. Kuzan and Coby had almost zero interactions. They have zero build up outside of fandom trying to push a Mentor battle. But that’s like saying Jinbe should fight Blackbeard since both were connected to Whitebeard.

Garp didn’t sacrifice himself saving Coby from Kuzan. Garp sacrificed himself saving all the marines from Pizarro. Look back at the chapter and you’ll see the reason Garp didn’t leave with the others was Pizarros imminent attacks.
