It's because that hack of an author had characters react "he's not even touching him" "they aren't even touching" when characters first used COC coating so it made people assume this the only way it worked. The thing is that we have dozens of examples of Kaido using COC coating while touching his opponets, and Luffy was literally stated to use conqueror when he punched fuck outta Kaido's face in G5 lol.
