This as well. It would be really bad for Mafia due to the no edit rule. It would also cripple hosts from starting the game as they make a few (separate) posts before the game starts, and those posts shouldn't be merged.

* You would miss new replies to a thread if the new reply gets merged with a previous reply.

I think turning it off for Mafia as a start is a good idea.

It was reactivated cause People messed around it. For all your Problems are reasonable Solutions. For example you can always mention People with @xyz, the People will get the notification.
