The problem isn't that Kaido doesn't have any depth.
Not every villain needs a grand backstory.
The problem is that Oda teased the readers about some deep backstory multiple (!) times (suicide motives, Oni background, Joyboy connection etc.) and didn't deliver on single one of those points...
Basically a complete recap (1096) and filler chapter.
Massive disappointment after the hype from last chapter, especially considering the fact that we are in a break week again.
Togashi has - due to his health and status as living mangaka legend - a very unique schedule.
He basically has the freedom to do anything he wants.
Whereas other mangaka are about 3 or 4 chapters ahead most of the time (only working on those), Togashi is currently simultaneously working on...
Thing is that post-skip there has really almost been next to zero interaction between Luffy and anyone not named Zoro/Nami/Sanji/Jinbei.
He's doing his Nika stuff, but SHs like Franky or Brook feel like they are, well, just there, but not really recognized by their own boss.
It's just the...
He is just poorly written, that's the problem.
You want readers to believe that Kizaru cares about Kuma and Vegapunk so much that he doesn't fight seriously, feeds Luffy, pretends to be defeated etc.?
Ok, all fine.
But then in the meantime you also have him just watch his friend Kuma getting...
Man, you're believing that WG propaganda?
Lmao.
We've seen what those "leveled towns" etc. were - a monastery full of scumbag monks that scammed poor people for example.
It's the exact same nonsense that the narrator would say about the SHs btw ("They brought multiple kingdoms to ruin...
BB is not a clear cut villain.
He's a chill guy with questionable and sometimes dark morals, that's it.
His one real "villain action" was killing Thatch - I'll give you that. Even the whole Ace situation wasn't evil at all. Ace himself went after him and even then BB did everything to convince...
I've said it for weeks now and people didn't want to hear it:
Rocks is not a villain.
Blackbeard isn't a real "villain" either in my book.
A douchebag rival, sure, but not a full blown "villain".
That's what they TELL you, but have you actually seen anything that indicates he's so violent on paper?
He didn't want to hurt Loki initially and when the latter attacked he himself taught the kid a hard, but fair lesson. He didn't go overboard while he could've easily just killed Loki there...
Biggest takeaway from the chapter:
Literally everything we have "known" about the "surpremely evil Rocks pirates" has just been some WG propaganda.
In reality they were like the bit more wild counterpart of the SH pirates.
Whatever happened on God Valley broke them and put some of them on a...
Aged like fine milk like so many posts in this thread :D
Always fun to come back here in general, because it's just a case-study of "who learns from the past" and "who doesn't learn from the past".
Man those finished Elbaf and Laughtale arcs were superb! ;-)
You can celebrate if we are just...
Once again the Rocks pirates being portrayed as lovable ruffians (Rocks and Harald even being friends, Shakky trusting them etc.), while hammering home the fact that the WG is the ultimate evil.
Oda: "Boys, great idea here: Cross Guild are actually the first ones to find the OP and Buggy becomes PK by accident! Boy, I am a genius!"
editors: "Man, we've been over this shit like TEN times already! How should they even decipher the road ponegliffs to get there?"
Oda: "Uhhhhhhmm..."...
I am 99% sure Oda didn't have any idea what the "God valley incident" would really look like up until recently, which is why he also cut it out from Kuma's flashback.
I think we've seen enough now to make that statement:
Oda is NOT portraying Rocks and his crew of nutjobs as villains.
Heck, Oda actually portrays them as somewhat lovable rowdies: They are protecting and worshipping Shakky, they are going after corrupt organisations (the scumbag monastery)...
