I think people here are taking gags way too seriously, if Nami truly needed protection someone else could have shielded her. Sanji came back because Kinemon told him he had a bad feeling aobut the cloud, same reason why Usopp suddenly stopped aiming at Kanjuro or Robin didn't use her power.
