Introduction
It seems some people do not appreciate the reason behind Ryuma's title and consider it "edgy" or "cringy". In this post, I decided to explain the reason why Ryuma was bestowed with that title.

The Man, the Myth, the Legend: Shimotsuki Ryuma
Shimotsuki Ryuma is a famous β€” perhaps the most famous β€” Samurai from the Wano country. He lived several centuries ago and was an undefeated swordsman of unparalleled might, instantly cutting down all who opposed him:

He was known as the Swordsman who carried the world's greatest warrior soul, and was given the epithet "King":

He had a reputation as "the strongest in the world":

In the past, Wanokuni was known as the "country of Gold" and was lusted after by Pirates and World Nobles alike. But against all these enemies from abroad, Shimotsuki Ryuma stood steadfast and put the fear of the Samurai into them:

Several centuries later, Marine Fleet Admiral Sakazuki was hesitant to send forces to Wano to prevent Mama from meeting up with Kaido because they weren't sure of the strength of the Samurai:

After his death, Ryuma was made a national treasure and consecrated as the "God of the Blade":

The Apex of Kenjutsu: Kokuto
Gyukimaru revealed that Ryuma forged Shusui into a black blade through his "history of battle":

The only other known wielder of a black blade is Dracule Mihawk, the current World's Strongest Swordsman:

In the world of One Piece, only the Strongest Swordsmen in the world have been shown to wield Black Blades:
  • Former World's Strongest Swordsman: Shimotsuki Ryuma
  • Current World's Strongest Swordsman: Dracule Mihawk
  • Future World's Strongest Swordsman: Roronoa Zoro

Many top tier blade users do not wield black blades:
  • "Whitebeard" Edward Newgate
  • "Pirate King" Gol D. Roger
  • "Dark King" Silvers Rayleigh
  • "Golden Lion" Shiki
  • "Red Hair" Shanks
  • "Big Mom" Charlotte Linlin
  • "Yellow Monkey" Borsalino
  • "Purple Tiger" Issho
(Linlin and Borsalino might be exceptions because their blades are made through the abilities of their devil fruits).

Even among the most powerful pirates in the world, only "Hawkeyes" Dracule Mihawk wields a Black Blade. Beyond the Haki of the Supreme King, beyond Mythical Zoans, "kokuto" are the rarest of abilities in the seas. Only those recognised as the greatest of swordsmen wield them.

The Legend of Ryuma
Ryuma is a legendary β€” nay practically divine β€” figure in the land of Wano, but of all of his legends, one, in particular, stands out. The story of the flying dragon he slew over the Flower Capital. This legend was mentioned twice, once in Thriller Bark and again in Wanokuni:

It was this legend that was depicted in Oda's Monsters!:

In fact, depicting dragon slaying in an epic double-page spread was Oda's entire reason for drawing Monsters!:

Ryuma's Legacy
The greatest legacy that Ryuma left behind was his sword Shusui. The Zombie of Ryuma personally bestowed the sword onto Zoro at the end of their epic duel, stating that the sword "will surely be satisfied" with Zoro as its master:

However, Gyukimaru stole the sword from Zoro and refused to return it because of its great importance to the people of Wano. Shusui was a "national treasure", and its theft by Moria spelt the beginning of the country's downfall:

Hiyori offered to give Zoro a suitable replacement in Enma, stressing its exceptional quality:

She stressed that the blade of the Sword God was revered as a relic and its theft caused the country to fall into deep sadness:

She personally begged him to return their "treasure" to Wano:

Zoro relented and agreed to relinquish Shusui for Enma, requesting that he be allowed to visit Ryuma's grave after the battle.

Given Shusui's paramount importance to the country and Zoro's acquiescence, I think Zoro has permanently relinquished Shusui.

Ryuma's Title
Ryuma's title is the crown of his legend:
  • He was an unparalleled swordsman that defeated all his opponents.
  • He was the "strongest in the world" and was given the epithet: "King".
  • Alone, he stood steadfast against all the adversaries from beyond β€” pirates and World Nobles alike β€” and put the fear of Samurai into the world.
    • Several centuries later, Marine Fleet Admiral Sakazuki was still hesitant to venture into Wano.
  • He reached the apex of sword mastery and forged his sword Shusui into Kokuto.
    • The only other Kokuto is wielded by the current greatest swordsman in the world.
  • He forged several legends, of which slaying a Dragon over the Flower Capital is but one.
  • His legacy β€” Shusui β€” is the national treasure of Wanokuni and is revered as a relic to its people.

Ryuma was the pride and natural treasure of Wanokuni. To honour his legend, he was posthumously consecrated as "God of the Blade". Ryuma's consecration as a God, is no different from how some individuals of incredible accomplishments were made saints by the Catholic Church after they died.

I already read your response to him so i will replay quickier than usual
:goyea:
Ryuma was the strongest swordsman in the world as you pointed out. He didnt know that though and when people even talked about the "king" He was clueless and thought its someone else.
Ryuma :
1. Nicknamed the king
2. Had a very strong legacy when alive and after he died.
3. Slayed a dragon and saved Wano
4. Forged a black blade
5. Beat many opponents including famous swordsmen.
All this is canon because oda made it canon (monsters and one piece)
Also:
1. His sword was considered a national treasure by Wano
2. Was called "god of the blade" in the manga
3.legacy throughout centuries

People still decide to undermine his achievements and go against what canon told us about him.
The only reason i could think off is his connection to Zoro
:choppawhat:
Zoro and ryuma are similar and paralleled in many ways.
They even look like twins and obviously Zoro inherited his swords amongst other things

Zoro will also become a "god of the blade " one day like ryuma.
And his name will be remembered for many centuries

And btw great thread @Cinera

Does this have anything to do with spoilers?
Not at all, this is just a reply to someone who claimed that Ryuma's title: "feels like a thirteen year-old naming his fanfic character" and accused it of being edgy and cringy.

It was a pretty fast read to be honest I don't understand why people would deny his title it was given by the author in first place second he deserved the title. Again I don't know why people would argue with you on the title they might call it cringy just to mess with the fans of Ryuma and troll a bit I cannot see another reason

Don't take it to seriously @Cinera they are messing with you I think

Someone clearly didn't understand the lore behind this character and took Ryuma and his title out of context.
"feels like a thirteen year-old naming his fanfic character" is unnecessary bashing and sounds more like a hate comment than anything else.
