So, the Buccaneers were listed by Gaban among several examples of the products of interspecies relationships.
This seems to clearly indicate the Buccaneers were created by mixing some bloodlines or other.

Which two races do you put together to make Buccaneers? Is it possible that Colon is in fact a new Buccaneer right now?
