I truly think that Oda fucked up with advanced haki
pre-skip, Luffy only got one power up. G2/G3 at Enies Lobby(and I count it as one because he invented them both at the same time). For the rest of the battles Luffy had, even when he was fighting stronger enemies, Luffy found a way to win via strategy.
He bypassed crocodile's logia powers via water
he bypassed enel's haki by attacking without intent
Even Luffy's sole pre-skip power ups, G2/G3, were essentially a new strategy to using his DF. His powerlevel didn't just boost to Lucci's level, Luffy instead invented new techniques to help him reach this tier.
With the post skip, you just don't get this. What does Luffy do when he is faced with a FS user? Now he needs to get FS as well. What does Luffy do when he is faced against kaido? Now he needs to get ACoA and ACoC. Whereas pre-skip, Luffy used his intellect to beat opponents stronger than himself, post skip he just becomes stronger. And I just can't help but feel like this was the wrong route to take with Luffy's character.
First off, advanced haki seems to exist solely for Luffy(and sometimes zoro) to jump powerlevels when the story needs it. Law doesn't get a haki bloom against doffy, despite killing doffy being Law's life purpose. Yet Luffy gets one against katakuri. Similarly, no villain gets a haki bloom when they are going to lose. Only luffy gets it. Its lazy writing at its finest.
It also absolutely kills the tension of the story to know that if Luffy is ever on the verge of defeat, his haki will bloom.
Ultimately, haki was a necessary inclusion into the story for Luffy to simply be able to compete with top tiers. But these consecutive haki power ups have basically turned one piece into DBZ and I just don't like it. I think the only form of advanced haki luffy should have got was ACoC and it should have been built up over several arcs. For Katakuri and Kaido, it would have been much better if Luffy won via strategy than these consecutive haki power ups.
I'm not even against him getting power ups against kaido or katakuri, but it would have been better writing if the power up was something he invented rather than a simple powerlevel boost. Like what if Luffy combined G2+G4 to bypass FS or had Hitetsu make him a sea stone tipped bo staff for kaido.
