Along with others, Tate just popularized the term. Hypergamy is not just a “mating strategy”, it is rather an innate sociological reality. Exceptions to the rule are just that; exceptions, generally not every woman will go for a broke “bum” who makes far less than them and historically that was definitely not the case.
