What we know about awakenings?
So far we know that awakening is the pinnacle of your DF prophency. That's why the only awakened users have their DF for a really long time. Usually since they are kids. That goes for Luffy, Law and I'm not sure when Doffy, Katakuri and Kid had their DF.
What we learned from Luffy awakening his DF? First of all that plot armor will never let him die. He literally died and came back from the dead with awakening. Unlike Zoro that was only implied to be dead Luffy was confirmed by Momonosuke.
I really doubt that this is the way for everybody to awake. Was WB and Ace already awake so they really died on the second time? Maybe Ace won over Teach and made him awake then he lost in the sequence? I really don't buy it.
But we know as a general rule of One Piece that you get stronger when you struggle the most. Therefore near death experiences makes your haki grow and why not this would work on DF?
How do we explain Law awakening if he didn't used against Doffy? He clearly didn't had back then since his lifetime goal wad to revenge Corazon. So his near death fight with Doffy enabled his awakening which he couldn't use back then since Luffy was there for protect him and finish Doffy. Or maybe his fight with Hawkins was the trigger?
What about Kid? We didn't saw the fight with Kaido or Shanks so we could especulate that any of this fights were the trigger. I think Kaido would have mention about his awakening to Luffy if he had saw just like his CoC. So I would bet Kaido fight was the trigger for Kid awakening.
What about rooftop? They both already had awakening there but Oda messed up. For whatever reason Oda thought a 5v2 wasn't a good moment to go all out. 1v1 and 2v1 is the best moment because characters are so clever thar rather to lower their advantage to use their best moves.
Okay now what about Doffy and Katakuri? Well Doffy knows how ridiculously strong Kaido is. So my bet is that he fought Kaido once, lost terribly and then triggered his awakening.
For Katakuri I would like to explore all the narrative around him. The narrative about he being invincible and having FS. As I said in the beginning it is a rule from One zpieve that you have to struggle in order to make your haki grow. So Katakuri would never get that stronger without difficult fights. And he said midnfight that Luffy wad the tougher opponent he ever faced. And he was mid diffing Luffy if not low diffing. So yeah Katakuri didn't grow his haki throughout battles. Then how? We know how Big Mom gets enraged and attacks her own children when her sickness hits on. My bet is that Katakuri used to get beat a lot by Big Mom and developed his haki to protect not only himself but also his brothers and sisters.
Okay so we have possibilities of how everyone awakened their DF. What about the ones we don't know but we are sure they have?
Akainu and Aokiji. Many especulate that logia awakening is changing environment like they did in Punk Hazard. My bet is that their own fight triggered each other awakening.
And if logia awakening is changing the climate then Ace was also awakened since he changed the climate at Chopper Island when he was there. So what triggered his awakening? Maybe getting his ass beat by WB for several days? I don't think so. WB was sleep diffing him and Ace wasn't trying that hard. So my best bet is that his fight with Jinbei did that.
Okay now I guess we only have to talk about Big Mom and Kaido. Right? Many think that they already showed their awakenings but Oda didn't tell. I'm not buying since Oda is telling us every character that has awakening and what is their awakening when they are using it. So yes Big Mom and Kaido didn't had awakening and that makes sense since they are birth monsters and never struggled in their lifes. Well Kaido struggled by Oden but not that much. So my bet is that when they leave magma they will have their awakenings and will comeback as stronger opponents. After all Rocks plot is not over, now that we know another member of Rocks was defeated is more likely that the remaining old crew reunites.
Oh sure. Let's not forget about Lucci. What wa his trigger? Luffy fight? For sure no. He would have comeback much earlier if he already had awakening after that fight. Remember that canon talk of Movie Gold? Lucci and Sabo faced each other many times during those 2 years. Sabo was always ahead of Luffy until G5. So Lucci also surpassed Luffy in order to fight Sabo as an equal. My bet is that their last fight was the trigger for awakening and Lucci was extreme diffing losing to Sabo before it.
So that's all my thoughts about it. Awakening is not only having a near death experience but also putting yourself enough effort on it. That's why Luffy only awakened now. He never lost and came back so many times then his fight with Kaido.
