FIRST FIGHT

Asakura Hao
Asakura Hao is the main antagonist and the de facto deuteragonist of Shaman King.

In his original life, the horror of war was always around Hao, so he saw the world as a dark and cruel place. However Ohachiyo taught Hao the positive aspects of life so he was happy until he accidentally absorbed the demon. His power of Reishi grew and grew until he started to constantly read peopleโ€™s minds against his will. Hao grew into a reasonably good-natured man and wanted to help those around him, which allowed the Asakura family to prosper. But his Reishi powers caused Hao to feel all the negative emotions and thoughts of humans, creating an โ€œoniโ€ within his heart. Thus he became obsessed with creating a world of only shaman and becoming Shaman King in order to do so. As of his third life, Hao is calm and always smiling, but with a cruel side hidden beneath it. Only rarely does he express anger and whoever angers him is burned right down to the soul by the Spirit of Fire. Hao enjoys watching the fights in the Shaman King tournament, especially if they involve strong shaman and Yoh. He says that when Yoh has reached his full capabilities, he will make Yoh a part of him to become unstoppable. Hao dislikes associating himself with Yohโ€™s family via family titles, glaring at Yoh when he called Hao โ€œNii-chanโ€ (Big brother) and his face darkened when his nephew, Hana, called him โ€œUncle Haoโ€.

Originally, Hao was born Asaha Douji and his mother was Asanoha Douji. But a group of humans killed her, believing that she was a demon and Hao was left to wander the land alone, thinking he had demon powers and wanting to destroy humanity.

During his first life, he lived under the uncertainty of corrupted and uncaring Heian nobility which drove the country into chaos and poverty. He saw the world as a grim and dark place until he met a small demon named Ohachiyo, who taught him all the positive aspects of life. Ohachiyo, who gave him the nickname Mappa Douji (Demon Boy). Ohachiyo convinced him to not hate humankind and enjoy life, showing him what there was to enjoy in the world. He also taught Hao a power called Reishi, which let him hear other peopleโ€™s thoughts and feelings. Thus Hao lived a peaceful existence, until a guard heard him apparently talking to himself (when he was talking to Ohachiyo). Thus he suspected the boy was a demon and reported this to a well known exorcist called Monk Densen.

However when Densen confronted Hao, the boy recognized him as the man who murdered his mother.
Densen, who was actually a fraud was easily defeated and killed by Hao, who use Ohachiyo to create his first Oversoul. But since Hao went over the limits of his furyoku, he lost control of his powers and accidently consumed Ohachiyo. This event would begin Hao on his path to darkness.

After an accident involving Hao's first Over Soul, Ohachiyo became a permanent part of Hao and cursed him with a dangerous ability of Reishi. In his teen years, having witnessed the corruption and greed in the capital, Hao was aloof to those around him, but as he grew into an adult, he became a relatively peaceful man who sought to help the people around him, and thanks to him the Asakura Family prospered. It was because of this gentle and kind nature that he took in the cat Matamune, whom he considered his only friend.

However, his Reishi abilities became quite strong and eventually went beyond his control. The negative emotions and thoughts of others were constantly overwhelming him and, since he was unable to turn his Reishi off, the deluge of negativity eventually created an "Oni" inside his own heart. The internal confusion and disorder that was created eventually led to his desire of creating the Shaman Kingdom on Earth and drove him to become the Shaman King in order to reach this main goal.

Having felt his shamanic powers for the first time, Hao continued to develop his abilities, growing greatly in power. At first, Hao had a good nature, training to become a demon exorcist. At one point, Hao created an oni out of loneliness, but was able to easily control it. Later, Hao met a stray cat named Matamune, who he considered his only true friend. He even gave the cat some of his spiritual energy in the hope of keeping Matamune with him forever. But Haoโ€™s absorption of Ohachiyo would drive him towards evil, forcing him to constantly hear the negative thoughts and feelings of humans. From what he heard, he felt the humans were a curse that had to be cleansed from the planet and eventually learned of the Shaman King tournament. Hao believed this was the key to destroying the humans, but the Asakura Clan learned of what he was planning and managed to defeat him.

In his third and most current incarnation, Hao is usually calm, cruel, and always smiles. The occasions when he is really angry is very rare and when he is angry with someone, that person is usually killed off and burned to death down to their soul by The Spirit Of Fire. He also likes to watch the Shaman Fights, particularly those that involve strong Shamans, and Asakura Yoh. He is not only interested in that, but he also proclaims that when Yoh reaches his limits, he will become one with him to become the strongest Shaman.

VS

Askeladd from Vinland Saga

In the manga Vinland Saga, Askeladd serves the role as the second most important character perfectly. The weight of his decisions impacts pivotal story arcs and pushes the narrative more than the youthful Thorfinn โ€”the actual protagonist. But that alone isnโ€™t what makes Askeladd such a great character. What defines Askeladd is the relationship he shares with Thorfinn that accents every choice made and hangs over both with looming dread.

Quite simplyโ€”Askeladd was responsible for the death of Thorfinnโ€™s father, a well revered former Viking. Swearing vengeance upon Askeladd, a prepubescent Thorfinn stole himself upon Askeladdโ€™s crew with the single thought of murdering this man. A deal was struck after several arduous tasks, Thorfinn would serve Askeladd faithfully and every completed assignment, Thorfinn would have the chance to murder Askeladd.

This dichotomy puts these two constantly at odds despite often times cooperating towards a single goalโ€”always Askeladdโ€™s goal.

Askeladd is the wall that Thorfinn strives to ascend and never quite reaches. Heโ€™s the schemer who is happy to use Thorfinnโ€™s how turbulent emotions and exceptional talent for life taking to his own benefit.

All this comes to a head after successfully completing a task in Northern Englandโ€”where Thorfinn challenges Askeladd yet again. This time though itโ€™s revealed that, after a brutal beat down, that Thorfinn will never overcome Askeladd. And the simple reason is because Thorfinn will never consent to doing the rational thing, killing Askeladd in his sleep.

Here we learn that Askeladd was once similar to Thorfinn. He was a slave however, watching his mother descend into insanity as she physically weakened. Given the first opportunity, Askeladd wormed his way into his father/masters inner circle and struck. He murdered his father and half siblings. His grudge was dealt with.

Askeladd represents a purpose for Thorfinn but also a mirror into a whole new world. One of violence and deceit, one that Thorfinn cannot immerse himself in despite being a prolific killer himself. Askeladd succeeds so well thanks to his own similarities and growth from where Thorfinn shies away from.

Even beyond his demise, sacrificing himself in an uncharacteristic display of altruism, he remained a pivotal figure for Thorfinn. His death shattered Thorfinnโ€™s will to continue and brought Thorfinn back to his fathers earnest intentions as opposed to the world of violence that Askeladd so embodies.

He is the cynical schemer who comes from a humble origin but nonetheless aspires to greatness. Carrying us all along the way.

SECOND FIGHT

Katsuki Bakugo

Bakugo Katsuki - aka - Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight

Bakugo is easily one of the most amazing characters in Boku no Hero Academia.
He is a character who would not strike as heroic or likeable in the first instance. He's too proud, ambitious, disrespectful and malicious. But he's also the one who has the best character development in all of the series - coming from being a bully to a genuine and reliable friend. Look at his interactions with Deku, Kirishima, All Might and other classmates. He's transformed to a team player.

Bakugo's childhood friends gave him the nickname "Kacchan". The other boys always looked up to Bakugo because of his energy, confidence, and natural talents. Because of this praise, Bakugo developed a rather arrogant and self-inflated view of himself. I think the reason why Bakugo grew up to be what he is can be contributed to the environment. Everyone supported him and he was born with a strong quirk. He was a natural leader and he was spoilt to the extent he became a bully. But he has matured and he is not the same. He has learnt from his mistakes and he is trying to be a good human being - in his own way.

Bakugo always admired All Might when he was young because the number one hero would always win against the adversaries. Once Bakugo developed his Quirk, his aggressive tendencies transformed into heinous bullying. He was constantly praised for his powerful Quirk and other talents. As a result of this, he developed a twisted superiority complex as a young child.

Bakugo is made to be a fully offensive fighter by collecting the nitroglycerin-like sweat coating his palms and hurling fiery bombs in quick succession at his opponents. Bakugo's Quirk allows him to secrete nitroglycerin-like sweat from the palms of his hands and ignite it on command, allowing him to create strong explosions. The more Bakugo sweats, the stronger his explosions become.
Bakugo has a strong grasp on the applications of his Quirk, something that was acknowledged by Best Jeanist, a top Pro Hero; not only can Bakugo use the explosions for attacking, he can also use them to propel himself and navigate through the air at high speeds, allowing him to fly at his opponents without giving them time to react, as well as evade incoming attacks, even while in the air. The shockwave from an explosion can even be used as a shield.

Bakugoโ€™s attitude can be interpreted as a cruel way to show respect toward his childhood friend. It not only shows us Bakugoโ€™s vulnerability and flaws, but his desire to improve and become a better hero. In the story, he's the one who's always inspiring Deku to be more strong. He himself aims to be the number one hero and he's even mellowed down to a level where he recognises Deku as a probable rival and also provides his support.

During the U.A. Sports Festival Fighting Tournament in which Bakugo battles Uraraka Ochako, Bakugo never pulled back his punches and never underestimated Urarakaโ€™s abilities. Despite how the spectators discouraged him, Bakugo didnโ€™t hold back. He chose to focus and remain cautious on the battlefield out of respect for Uraraka and how she was able to make it to the semi-final round of the school tournament. While people would think that he was too rough with her and should have shown restraint, he's the person who gave respect to her. Uraraka was strong herself and she definitely didn't need anyone's pity. While this treatment might seem harsh to people, but he did what would be the right thing to do.

Being a part of the hero course, Bakugo experienced a lot of troubles with his classmates, including fighting villains who infiltrated their school to being kidnapped by the League of Villains, Bakugo was able to redefine for himself about what a villain is. Bakugo seems to be the closest to Kirishima and it was shown in the Bakugo rescue arc where he recognises him as his "friend".

Conclusion:
If we look at similar relationships in anime, such as the classic rivalries between Pokemonโ€™s Ash Ketchum and Gary Oak or Naruto's Naruto Uzumaki and Uchiha Sasuke , then itโ€™s clear that there is another character example for the familiar deuteragonist mold. Having characters like Bakugo overcome their internal conflict to become the best reflection of themselves is equally interesting to watch. Bakugo may need more work on his talking skills but he wouldnโ€™t be quite as interesting without his flaws.

VS

Samwise Gamgee from LOTR
"Bravery is not the absence of fear. Bravery is feeling the fear, the doubt, the insecurity and deciding that something else is more important".

Samwise Gamgee also known as Samwise "The Brave" is one of the 2 deuteragonists of the Lord of the rings film series (the other being Aragorn). He is Frodo Baggins' gardener/best friend who by chance and the will of a wizard ends up joining Frodo on his quest to destroy the one ring of power.

Throughout the 3 films Sam shows tremendous loyalty towards his friend Frodo and bravery in the face of impossible odds. What makes Sam special to me is his bravery and how he overcomes his self doubt and the fact that he is the voice of reason for Frodo on their quest. As Frodo once quoted "Frodo would not have gotten very far without Sam".

THIRD FIGHT

Griffith from Berserk
Griffith is one of the greatest manga characters ever created and is the deuteragonist/villain of Kentaro Miuraโ€™s masterpiece Berserk. He is the leader of the reborn Band of Falcon and was the leader of the original Band of Falcon. His story, character, the narrative it takes is a direct contrast to the protagonist of the series - Guts.
As the leader of the original Band of the Falcon, he and his mercenaries are able to end the Hundred-Year War and bring peace to the war-torn kingdom of Midland. Following the desertion of his most trusted confidant Guts, Griffith beds Princess Charlotte on impulse, bringing about his imprisonment, year-long crippling torture, and the seeming demise of his dream. Though he is eventually rescued by the band, his state of extreme invalidity and undying desire to obtain his own kingdom compels him to sacrifice his comrades during the Fifth Eclipse, for kinsmanship with the God Hand as their fifth member Femto โ€“ a demonic, idealized version of himself stripped of his human inhibitions. In time, he is incarnated into the Physical World, concerned solely with the realization of his dream, which comes to pass with his thwarting of the Kushan invasion of Midland, the Great Roar of the Astral World he prompts, and the rise of his utopian capital city, Falconia
When we meet Griffith in the Golden Age Arc, he's introduced as a charismatic white knight, so unique in the world that he appears like a "saint" sent to save his followers, the "blazing inferno" for lost souls to gather around in an otherwise hostile world. He's a childish dreamer in a world where impractical things like dreams are in short supply, but because he can deliver on his convictions, he becomes the "miracle" people project their hopes upon, starting with his band of mercenaries and eventually growing to be a symbol for the entire kingdom of Midland. Long before the post-Eclipse prophecies of the Hawk of Light are spread, Kentaro Miura paints Griffith as someone who transcends the bounds of his world. Characters often comment on his almost otherworldly allure, which they can only admire but never quite comprehend.
Aside from his heritage as a poor commoner who refused to quietly waste away in a meaningless existence as a back-alley rat, we learn very little about Griffith's childhood. While admired and idolized by his Band of the Hawk, Griffith is shrewd and ruthless in his ambition, manipulating or disposing of the people who oppose his rise to power without hesitation. He's arrogant and brutally realistic about human nature, but most importantly, he's the kind of person that Guts aspires to stand on equal ground with.

VS

Ei Sei from Kingdom
Ei Sei is the 31st King of Qin, and a man who dreams of Unifying China. The story of Kingdom takes place during the bloody Warring States period of China, and Qin is one of the remaining seven states left.

Sei is also completely aware of what he will have to do in order to successfully unify China, he knows how much blood he will have to shed. The fact that he recognizes this makes him such a breath of fresh air for me, he doesn't care if he has to go down as a Tyrant, he wants to end the Warring States period and establish a new, better world. Sei is intelligent enough to realize that the citizens of enemy states will one day be Qin citizens, and as such he ensures Qin generals treat captive enemy citizens well.

One of my favorite parts of Sei's character is his relationship with the MC of Kingdom, Shin. Shin's goal of becoming a "Great General under the Heavens" and Sei's goal of Unifying China are indirectly intertwined. The long talks they have at the end of every major arc are always relaxing. I'm interested in seeing Shin finally become "Sei's Sword".

Sei had to fight tooth and nail to get where he is now. As a matter of fact, he wasn't even born in Qin. He was born in the enemy of State of Zhao, which had recently lost 400,000 soldiers in a war against Qin. There, he was all alone. He was hated and violently harassed by the citizens of Zhao because of his royal Qin blood. Even his mother was his enemy. However, one day, he was smuggled out of Zhao by merchants, who risked and sacrificed their lives for him, a complete stranger. Sei was deeply touched by this display of kindness, and it's ultimately what inspires him to this very day. However, once Sei made his way to Qin, there was another giant obstacle looming over him, Ryofui, the Chancellor of Qin.

The conflict between Ryofui and Sei is one of the best parts of Kingdom. At the beginning Sei, despite being the King of Qin, had no power compared to Ryofui. However, over the course of the story, Sei's faction slowly rises in power. The finale of Ryofui and Sei's rivalry is an epic, climatic debate where Sei wins in an ideological debate.

Without Sei's overarching presence in political-centered arcs, Kingdom wouldn't be as good as it is. Take away Sei from the Kingdom, and you'd lose countless amazing moments. It speaks volumes that Sei manages to be an interesting character who develops and improves over the course of the story while also being the King of a nation.

I'd say both. The deuteragonist is like the second most important character. I asked Berserk fans and they agreed lol.
