Just as the title says, who is the best protagonist in manga?

I'll note down some protagonists off the top of my head. You can recommend more that will be added to the poll. Of course you may state others that are not in the poll as well.

You may vote for 5 of them.

I will go with Allen Walker for many reasons. He is not brain dead character who will rush on enemies without strategy. Also he is not someone who will judge people for "evil" acts, like liying or just do some leather bad things. In same time he is not evil so eventually you will start emphatize with his character.

Allen Walker is deep character that has interesting, depressing backstory so in manga he never acted like another shounen hero. His character resemples "Pierro", or said clown, who is faking everything about him. Even his smile was always full of lie, case eventually his character development lead him to suicidal actions and motives. While eventually story crushed him in many ways, so even his main goal, even his believes was destroyed. Especially in the last chapters his story and his character development made him even deeper then before, when he understood that his whole life story was nothing but lies. But even when that happened, he didn't betray himself, he didn't felt hatred, or desire became evil beign. He continued to walk road that he choise himself.

In same time, Allen has his normal hero moments when he is trying to do things right and fight for goodness. So he isnot some ammoral chatacter who wants whole world burn.

His story could be described as tragedy from the very begining to the very end.

My 5 picks are
Light, Lulu, Guts, Allen Walker and Moriarty.

Don't really think I need to say much about any of them, bar maybe Liam.
I wrote about him in the past.
If thereโ€™s any franchise thatโ€™s been told and retold through a variety of media itโ€™s Sherlock Holmes, so itโ€™s no surprise to see an anime take of the iconic detective (nor is it the first time). However, Moriarty the Patriot tells the story from the POV of Sherlockโ€™s most noteworthy adversary and kiiiiinda gets you on his side, like, immediately.

Fans of mysteries will likely be familiar with at least the most famous of Doyleโ€™s Holmes stories, perhaps through Hollywood or BBC interpretations, if not through the stories themselves. Though originally a rather minor character, Professor Moriarty has come to serve as Holmesโ€™s arch nemesis in modern tellings. He is a cold, brilliant, and calculating villain, the โ€œNapoleon of crimeโ€ who keeps the hero on his toes at all times. Because Moriartyโ€™s background is inconsistent in the Doyle stories, it is easy to reinvent him, as Ryosuke Takeuchi and Hikaru Miyoshi do in Moriarty the Patriot. In the manga, the boy who would become Professor Moriarty and his younger brother, Louis, are poor orphans who have been adopted into the Moriarty family as a show of noblesse oblige. Our protagonist jaunts around town under the guise of William James Moriarty, the Moriarty familyโ€™s younger son who has no interest in the people of their town. Together with the eldest son Albert, the future Professor and Louis conspire to kill the cruel Moriarty family in an โ€œaccidentalโ€ fire, leaving the three boys to rectify the wrongs of the English noble classes as nobles themselves.

The premise

The 19th century British Empire is an entire mess, rife with problematic aristocrats who delight in tormenting the lower class. The class system is set to work against the average citizen and the Moriarty brothers, who are part of an aristocratic family themselves, have decided to tear the unjust structure apart.

William James Moriarty (the middle brother/main protagonist) works as a professor by day but also works as a โ€œcrime consultantโ€ who takes cases from those who have been wronged by the upper class. He and his brothers (Albert and Louis) work as a team, but their actions soon catch the attention of Sherlock Holmes, setting the stage for the ultimate battle of wits.

And there we have our twist: The Professor Moriarty who is so evil in most Sherlock Holmes adaptations is, in this manga, attempting to equalize society. He is a class traitor in both senses; growing up poor, he has risen to the nobility, but as a noble he consults on the behalf of the working classes, holding his wealthy peers accountable for their exploitation of, and distaste for, anyone they deem below them. But he is not completely sanitized as a misunderstood villain. No, Professor Moriarty is still as calculating as ever, his meticulous methods still relying heavily on manipulation, coercion, and threats. His motives might be pure, but his means still leave the ordinary person shuddering at their cruelty.

How Moriartyโ€™s cases work

The basic formula goes a little something like this: one of the Moriarty brothers (usually Willaim) hears about a crime (usually murder). The crimes Moriarty takes on always involve the lower class, those who donโ€™t have the means to seek justice. Though, honestly, even if they could their cries would go unheard because the culprits are always upper-class citizens who are either never suspected or who get away with it because theyโ€™re rich.

This ranges from โ€œbored rich asshole kills children on his off dayโ€ to โ€œgardener pleads with his boss to let him consult his doctor because his son is dying, but his boss is a rich asshole whoโ€™s worried that his gardenerโ€™s kid is gonna give him poor person cooties.โ€

Did I mention that the boss is rich because of his gardenerโ€™s hard work?

Once Willaim (with the help of his brothers) gets all the pieces together, he gets a hold of the wronged party and offers his services, making sure to point out how this, technically, would be seen as a crime even if they were the ones who were wronged! William doesnโ€™t do the job unless if the grieving family wants him to, so basically, he asks for consent to rid the world of this particular brand of filth. If they agree then a plan is put into motion where the grieving party is able to come face to face with the aristocrat who killed their loved one.

Now hereโ€™s the kicker.

William isnโ€™t the one who kills the target, the grieving family does. This can be as subtle as serving food that someone reacts poorly to, or as blunt as stabbing someone to death. Whatever the case, William makes sure all the evidence is cleaned up, and the family is able to get away with it.

Miyoshiโ€™s artwork gives Moriarty a bishonen air, making his complexity all the more alluring to the manga fan who is accustomed to the dramatically layered characters of the medium. Indeed, the cast is made up of several handsome men working with Moriarty to realize his utopian dream. The Victorian setting is well established, both visually and as part of the plot, depicting an England on the verge of change and progress.

The Lord of the Crime, Moriarty

Upon becoming the Lord of the Crime, a stage in his plan, he has already designated a man who shall stop him and be the shinning light of the world. That man is none other than Sherlock Holmes

Moriarty has made himself into the ultimate evil, thus forcing people to ally against him, and stay united, and thus fulfilling his coveted dream.

Oh and I found my piece on Lulu.
For those of you who are not familiar with the character, Lelouch Lamperouge is the main protagonist of a decade-old anime, Code Geass. The series takes place in an alternate version of our own world, with its own alternate history to boot. In this world, the empire of Britannia rules over a large part of the world with an iron fist. Citizens of the mainland empire consider people from other countries, like the storyโ€™s main setting of Japan, to be inferior, and thus treat those people like trash. And that brings us to Lelouch.

Lelouch is the son of the Emperor of the totalitarian nation of Britannia. After his mother is killed and his little sister blinded and crippled he was sent to the nation of Japan as a hostage. He ends up under the care of the leader of the nation, until him and his little sister can escape. After Britannia invades Japan, fearing that they will again be used as pawns, he hides his little sister with a Britannian noble family, the Ashfordโ€™s. Lelouch hides in plain sight, pretending to be an ordinary Britannian school student in Japan, when in reality, he is actually a royal prince of the empire placed in exile. Wanting to exact revenge on his father for exiling him and despairing on the inside over the plight of the Japanese people, Lelouch feels powerlessโ€ฆuntil one fateful day. Circumstances lead to a chance meeting with the mysterious woman, C.C., who grants him the power of Geass, a supernatural ability that often has an effect on the mind and consciousness. Lelouchโ€™s geass, to put it simply, is to command another person to do as he says, but the power can only work on an individual once. With his newfound power and the intelligence with which he was born, he could now face off against Britannia and do what he set out to do upon his exile.

See, Lelouch is a brilliant young man. He has a strategic mind that is almost unmatched, even among the Britannian royal family. He had a great deal of siblings, and each and every one of them regarded him with respect. Many hated him, given the fact that his mother was not of noble birth. However, they respected his intellect in a profound way. His oldest brother, Schneizel, says that Lelouch was a brother who โ€œI both loved and feared.โ€ He was the only one who was able to stand tall to his intellect in games like chess. His brilliant mind is his most valuable asset, but it is not his only one.

Upon acquiring the Geass, Lelouch sets out to do what he wanted. In order to achieve that he creates a masked persona called Zero. He never shows his face to his allies, since he knows that they wouldnโ€™t trust a Britannian. And if they ever found out that he is a Britannian prince, they would likely kill him. Thus, his masked campaign to bring down Britannia begins.

There is a constant battle within Lelouch over how far to go with his revolution. As he goes further and further, he is forced to make harsher and harsher choices.
Over the course of the series, Lelouch often finds himself having to test his morals to great extents. Someone who simply wanted to bring a better world for his sister slowly comes to the realization that, in his world, it all cannot simply be done by just means. As time goes on, he finds himself struggling to do what is right and starts doing what is necessary to achieve his goals, even if those acts are acts of evil. While he realizes that some of the things that he did were wrong, his attempt at creating a safer world could not have been done any other way. Lelouch feels the guilt in all that he does. He knows that he has sinned. Lelouch transcended the boundary between hero and villain.

He builds himself up as the worst tyrant in the world. He destroys any and all rivals that oppose him. He uses his Geass to enslave thousands upon thousands of people. He betrays his friends and the world, and unites the world under his tyrannical reign. And then, Zero, the symbol of justice, shows up and slays him. With this, the world is able to move forward and make peace. Nunnally is the kind hearted empress, Suzaku is the protector of Nunnally and the symbol of justice, and Schneizel is the master strategist and politician.

Lelouch, the devil himself, sacrifices everything for the sake of his sister's world. His name will be remembered in hatred. His legacy will be tainted. His very existence will be remembered as a mistake upon the world. But that doesn't matter.

For the sake of world peace, destruction must come before creation.

Disclaimer: I've only read up to 11 volumes of AoT currently, and I like Eren, he's very dope, but I need to see more before I place him up there. I have not read or watched FMAB or VS, but I have heard that both Edward and Thorfinn are amazing. When I do read those I might change my mind. However, it's hard for me to envision anyone ever surpassing Light and Lulu.

Add Yuuji to the poll.

I will pick my 5 but I will go off of how much I enjoyed them, ofc it might be connected to them being the best in my opinion but dunno tbh.

It would take too long for me to go off on everyone and why X better than Z so I will go off of pure enjoyement.

Wanna vote for Guts but...he's not evolving along with each plot points.

Wanna vote for Eren but...i will never forgive Isayama for raping his entire character (after declaring world war, turns out he's a liar and pussy who doesn't do what he declared in double spread)

That leaves...

Lelouch Lamperouge and Miyamoto Musashi. Lelouch is the most cunning, while Inoue's Musashi is the most heart-felt.
