THE BRACKET

Canute - Vinland Saga
Canute, from Vinland Saga, undergoes one of the most dramatic and transformative character arcs in anime. Initially introduced as a weak and seemingly passive prince, Canute’s evolution into a strong and decisive leader is a testament to the power of personal growth and inner strength. At the beginning, he’s sheltered and manipulated by those around him, but as he witnesses the brutality of the world, he begins to understand that in order to achieve his goals, he must take control of his own fate. Canute’s development is tied to his growing sense of purpose and his desire to build a better world, even if it means becoming something he once despised.

What makes Canute’s arc so compelling is how his transformation is driven by his evolving worldview. He starts as a figurehead, dependent on others, but slowly grows into a powerful and strategic leader who takes charge of his own destiny. This shift from a naΓ―ve prince to a ruthless ruler is both shocking and believable, as we see Canute struggle with the moral and psychological cost of his decisions. His evolution is a fascinating exploration of power, leadership, and the complexities of human nature. By the end of his arc, Canute is no longer the frightened prince he once was, but a man who’s ready to carve his own path in the world, regardless of the consequences.

VS

Yugi Muto- Yugioh
Yugi Moto from Yu-Gi-Oh! is the epitome of a character who grows not only in strength but in understanding. Initially, Yugi is portrayed as a shy, kind-hearted teenager who is often overlooked. However, after solving the ancient Millennium Puzzle, Yugi becomes the host for the spirit of an ancient pharaohβ€”Atemβ€”who imbues him with newfound courage and strength. Together, Yugi and Atem take on various challenges, from dueling to facing off against evil forces, while Yugi’s emotional growth centers around learning to trust himself and rely on his friends.

What makes Yugi stand out is the balance between his quiet, compassionate nature and the bold confidence that emerges when he’s protecting those he cares about. His relationship with Atem adds a deep emotional layer to his character, as he struggles with the complexities of sharing his body with another spirit, while also forging his own identity. Yugi’s transformation from a timid boy to a leader, both in the dueling world and in life, is a testament to his personal growth and determination. His strength isn't just in the games he plays but in his heart and the friendships he builds along the way.

VS

Denji - Chainsaw Man
Denji from Chainsaw Man is one of the most raw, unfiltered, and emotionally grounded protagonists in recent anime and manga. What makes him stand out isn't some noble ambition or overpowered resolve β€” it’s how pathetically human he is. Denji starts off as a boy who’s been completely broken by poverty, abuse, and neglect, living in filth and selling organs just to survive. His goals are painfully simple: eat good food, sleep in a decent bed, and maybe touch a girl. And yet, within that simplicity lies the brilliance of his character β€” he’s a reflection of raw human desire and survival, not the idealized hero. This makes his growth, setbacks, and struggles all the more powerful because they feel real, not mythologized.

As Denji gets pulled deeper into the brutal world of devil hunting, his character evolves in haunting ways. He’s thrown into situations far beyond his emotional maturity, constantly being used, manipulated, and traumatized. But through it all, he keeps going β€” not out of heroic duty, but because he’s stubborn and still clings to small dreams. He’s funny, vulgar, shockingly honest, and sometimes selfish, but underneath that rough surface is a kid desperate for love and a place to belong. Denji’s journey isn’t about becoming the strongest β€” it’s about trying to stay human in a world that chews people up. That emotional grit, combined with his absurd personality and moments of unexpected heart, is what makes Denji one of the best main characters in anime today.

VS

Kurta Kurapika - Hunter x Hunter
Kurapika stands as one of the most complex and emotionally rich characters in Hunter x Hunter. His singular quest for vengeance against the Phantom Troupe for slaughtering his clan drives a dark, tragic arc that balances intellect, restraint, and emotional unraveling. Unlike many revenge-driven characters, Kurapika operates with methodical precision, making him a cerebral protagonist who’s constantly walking a tightrope between justice and obsession. His development through the Yorknew and Succession Wars arcs is a masterclass in long-form character writing.

What makes Kurapika such an excellent character is the emotional toll his journey takes on himβ€”and how that toll is never ignored. He sacrifices everything, including his morality and health, in his pursuit of justice, making his actions deeply human and painfully real. He’s a hero whose descent mirrors a slow-burning tragedy, and that layered, haunting portrayal sets him apart as one of the most compelling figures in shonen storytelling.

VS

Kenzo Tenma - Monster
Kenzo Tenma from Monster is a brilliant neurosurgeon whose life spirals into chaos after a series of morally ambiguous decisions and the unfolding of a sinister conspiracy. At the start of the series, Tenma is a man defined by his ideals and a strong sense of morality, believing that saving lives is the ultimate calling. However, as his decisions lead him into a dark world of murder and deception, Tenma’s character is tested in ways that force him to confront the consequences of his actions. His pursuit of justice and redemption in a world of moral gray areas forms the core of his journey.

What makes Tenma such a compelling protagonist is his internal conflict. He is neither a typical hero nor a villain, and his deep-seated guilt and determination to right his wrongs add significant layers to his character. Tenma’s emotional struggle and his complex relationships with other characters, especially the enigmatic Johan, create an intense atmosphere throughout Monster. His search for redemption is not just about righting wrongs but about reconciling his actions with his sense of humanity. Kenzo Tenma’s journey is a heartbreaking exploration of guilt, morality, and the consequences of one's choices.

VS

Edward Elric - Fullmetal Alchemist
dward Elric, as depicted in the original Fullmetal Alchemist manga, is a deeply layered and complex character whose personal flaws and strengths shape the emotional heart of the story. Unlike the Brotherhood anime, which follows a more streamlined and closely faithful adaptation of the manga's latter arcs, the original manga's portrayal of Edward is richer in its exploration of guilt, sacrifice, and the moral consequences of his actions. The core of Edward’s journey revolves around his attempts to find the Philosopher’s Stone to restore his brother, Alphonse, and himself to their original bodies after a botched alchemy ritual that cost Edward his arm and leg and trapped Alphonse’s soul in an armored suit. This quest for redemption is grounded in his deep sense of responsibility and his unrelenting desire to undo the damage he caused, a theme that makes his character so compelling.

What truly sets Edward apart in the Fullmetal Alchemist manga is his internal struggle and the evolution of his understanding of alchemy, ethics, and the human condition. While Brotherhood largely focuses on action and the pursuit of the stone, the manga delves deeper into the philosophical implications of their actions, particularly with Edward's relationship to his own mistakes. Edward’s brashness, his stubbornness, and his frequent clashes with authority stem not from arrogance but from a genuine desire to protect those he loves and right the wrongs of his past. His journey is not just about retrieving the Philosopher's Stone but about understanding that the price of human life and existence cannot be reversed by simply "fixing" things with alchemy. The manga portrays Edward as a more conflicted and emotionally complex character, often pushing his personal limits, confronting darker truths, and learning that true strength isn’t simply about fighting or achieving goalsβ€”it’s about accepting responsibility and facing the consequences of one's choices. Edward's emotional growth, especially his evolving relationship with Alphonse and his increasing realization of the importance of life, makes his story one of deep resonance and powerful development

VS

Mob - Mob Psycho 100
Mob, the protagonist of Mob Psycho 100, is a young middle schooler with immense psychic powers, but his greatest struggle is not with his powersβ€”it's with his desire for a normal, peaceful life. Mob is kind, humble, and often socially awkward, yet his psychic abilities are so powerful that they constantly put him in dangerous situations. Throughout the series, Mob's growth is less about learning to control his powers and more about learning to control his emotions and understanding what it means to be truly strong. His internal conflict between wanting to live a simple life and the overwhelming pressure of his abilities forms the emotional heart of the story.

What makes Mob particularly compelling is his deep emotional complexity. His kindness and vulnerability make him relatable, and his journey of self-acceptance is both heartwarming and powerful. Mob’s growth isn't just about becoming stronger but about understanding what it means to be human. As he faces challenges and builds relationships, Mob's development into a confident and balanced individual is both satisfying and inspiring. His journey is a powerful reminder that true strength comes from within, and Mob’s evolution into someone who values relationships and emotional growth makes him one of the most memorable characters in anime.

VS

Musashi Miyamoto - Vagabond
Musashi Miyamoto in Vagabond is a deeply philosophical and multi-dimensional version of the famous swordsman. Based on the historical figure, Musashi's journey in the manga is not only a physical battle with opponents but also an inner battle with his own understanding of life, death, and purpose. From the very beginning, Musashi is depicted as a wild, almost untamed warrior driven by a desire to test his skills and prove himself. However, as he progresses, his encounters with other warriors, monks, and philosophers force him to confront the deeper aspects of his existence. His path to mastery is intertwined with profound moments of self-realization, as he seeks a deeper understanding of what it means to live a fulfilling life.

What sets Musashi apart as an MC is the depth of his character development and his existential journey. His struggle to balance his thirst for martial prowess with the emptiness he feels inside is a key element of the narrative. As Musashi faces internal and external conflicts, he evolves from a brash, impulsive warrior into a more reflective and wise figure, seeking meaning beyond combat. His journey isn’t just about becoming the greatest swordsman but about understanding his own humanity, confronting his demons, and finding peace. His complex inner monologues, philosophical insights, and gradual transformation make him one of the most compelling and profound protagonists in the world of manga.

2 hype jobs 😹 nothing more.
I've not read Vagabond, but I voted him because I assume it's a manga interpretation of the real Miyamoto Musashi's exploits

So maybe you could argue that since it's historical fiction using a very real figure that they're not "best character" material since they're not really original. But that being said, I don't feel like any of the alternatives does it for me
