I suggest skimming the first chap/volume and use both synopsis and what you see as a base of judgement.

And always ask yourself "what makes a good manga".
Easy as that: Flow and immersion.

Now there are some big classics here like Trigun, Golgo and Hellsing...I guess they all deserve to get further.
