So in one piece, you don't see too many characters with family members. And this makes sense for the most part, the pirate life isn't exactly meant for families. Most pirates probably don't have families; for some its because they care too much about their own ambitions to sacrifice them for the sake of others; for others, they are outcasts who were abandoned or orphaned by their families. For most pirates we've seen, their crew is their family.
However I think that it is an entirely different story for marines. Marines are law abiding citizens, for the admirals especially, they are most likely educated men with a great degree of morality. In my mind, it makes sense for the admirals to have families. For a marine, having a family would give them something to protect, something to fight for.
And out of all the marines, I think it would make the most sense to give Akainu a family. Since his introduction back in Robin's flashback, we've only seen one side of him. A somewhat one dimensional madman who is wants to stamp out his view of evil no matter the cost. A guy who would blow up a ship full of civilians if it meant saving his country.
For akainu, I think giving him a wife or children would humanize him, which I think would be a good thing. Because I don't think Akainu is 100% evil. Akainu does what he does because he believes its for the greater good. In his mind, it would be better for a ship of civilians to die than to risk the chance that a pirate or a terrorist could gain access to the ancient weapons. We see that a he does indeed have a sense of morality in his conversation with the gorosei, where he shows his disdain for the corruption of the celestial dragons.
I honestly think that akainu is deep down a good person who was led astray by his commitment to justice. He reminds me a lot of Javier, from the book Les Miserables, who has a similar character.
I think Oda has a lot in store for Akainu way beyond his inevitable fight with Luffy. I could even see him joining hands with luffy and going against he world government when the existence of IM is revealed and the corruption of the celestial dragons is exposed in full light.
Humanizing akainu would lay the foundation for this change of heart. it would also add a bit of moral grayness into the fight if Luffy vs Akainu ever took a darker turn. So far, Luffy has never killed someone, however he has never expressed that he is morally against killing. After all the man who he idolizes the most, shanks, had a man shot before his face. So when faced with the man who killed his brother, what's to say that Luffy wouldn't want to do a bit more to akainu than simply beat his ass. What if, Luffy tried to kill akainu.
anyways these are just my thoughts. Feel free to leave yours as well.
