So there has been much talk, ever since zoro first used asura back in Enies lobby, that the power of asura came from Zoro's sandai kitetsu. the rationale was that since the sandai kitetsu is a cursed sword, it must be connected to asura, as asura is a demon form.
But there's something about this that doesn't make sense to me. That being that the concept of "supernatural swords". Zoro's asura, which gives him 6 arms and 3 heads, is akin to a devil fruit ability. We've seen some people with supernatural swords, kinemon possibly being one of them. However, this is seemingly a very rare ability.
there are so many powerful swordsmen in one piece; law, fujitora, Cracker, smoothie, and I'd even throw big mom into this mix. If there are so many powerful sword users, why don't we see other people using these demon powers? I mean Oda confirmed that Law's sword is cursed, why hasn't law, who has shown himself to be equally as capable as zoro imo, used such an ability?
asura is something that pre-skip zoro used. If pre-skip zoro could use it, why aren't much more powerful swordsmen using it?
The obvious answer is that it is not an ability that is based off of strength alone. After all, if it was, we would see people like Cracker, who is a far better swordsman than pre-skip zoro, using it.
I think that the user must have some sort of a special connection with a blade in order to unlock its powers. Zoro, as hinted by Oda in the SBS, could be a shimotsuki. At the very least, we now know that he was trained by Kozaburo's son(Koshiro) and inherited the will of kozaburo's granddaughter(Kuina). Due to the ties Zoro has with Kozaburo, koshiro, and kuina, all of whom have previously welded the sword, zoro was able to unlock the sword's true power.
perhaps asura is the manifestation of the wills of the previous users of the wado ichimonji, lending zoro their strength.
overall, I think it would make much more sense for Zoro's ultimate power up to be tied to the sword he has the most history with rather than something he picked up back in loguetown.
