When it comes to ages, eras we have characters who fit in and those who are a little off and I think based on agenda people will put characters in different generations. The three generations mostly referred to are:
Old Gen
- WB, Roger, Ray, Garp, Sengoku, Rocks

Mid Gen
- Shanks, Mihawk, BB, Akainu, Aokiji, Dragon

New Gen
- Luffy, Zoro, Kid, Law, Sabo, Coby, Yamato, Loki

But this leaves some characters who are between these generations like Kaido. You can put BM in same gen as WB (she was 6 years younger) but putting Kaido in same gen as WB/Roger seems weird because the age gap is bigger (15 years). And if you put Kaido in the Old Gen then you should put Kizaru in the Old gen too since he and Kaido are almost same age (1 year difference). And if you put Kizaru in Old Gen then you should put his brother Akainu (3 years younger) also there as well as Dragon (same age as Akainu) but then we have Garp and Dragon ending up in same gen.

The way I see it it would be better to put Kaido in Mid Gen but then we have him 19-20 years older than BB and Shanks. Which is super weird because the age difference between Shanks and Kaido/Kizaru is almost the same as the age difference between Shanks and Luffy. Shanks is actually 9 years younger than Katakuri and age difference between Kata and Yamato is 20 years.

Should we add a new gen to the ranks to cater for these inbetweeners?

There are Two ways to look at it:

1. From Luffy's Journey Perspective, anyone who was in his Prime when Luffy started his Journey in Chapter 1 is "Old Gen"
2. There are Multiple Gens depending on who is the "Face" of Pirates

In Second Case, We already know how it Progressed,
First, it was Xebec's Era, followed by Roger Pirates Trio Era,
Oden was supposed to Rule Following Era, but He Died too soon (Betrayal),
Start of Great Pirate Era (For One Piece) made everyone seek either their Father Emperor (WB) or Mother Empress (BM), it was their Era,
Years Later, another Monster was called an Emperor & that's Kaidou, He was the Biggest Pirate Threat as BM/WB reached 60 & Past their Prime,
Finally, it ended with One Last Addition & that's Shanks (I'd also like to believe Beckman was seen to be his Equal similar to Rayleigh/Roger),

Now, who are these Guys? (Xebec, Roger, Rayleigh, Gaban, Oden, Newgate, Linlin, Kaidou, Shanks, Beckman)
They are Adv. CoC Users in their Prime, They are the actual Rulers of Pirate World,
So Era changes every time a New Adv. CoC User (or More) reaches their Prime (Unless They meet an Unfortunate Early End like Oden),
Blackbeard is Only Character in History who actually reached this Level without Adv. CoC, thanks to the Impossible Feat of Consuming Two DFs,

Note: It's interesting that these Pirate King Level Characters include Xebec + Three Rocks Pirates (WB, BM, Kaidou) & Roger + Three Roger Pirates (Rayleigh, Gaban, Oden), and now We have Shanks instead of Roger, and Blackbeard instead of Xebec,

Does this mean that Three of Red-Hair Pirates are also Shanks Level, while Three of BB Pirates are also BB Level,
If History is repeating itself then not just Beckman, but also Roux/Yasopp are Adv. CoC Users,
And BB isn't gonna be only One who reached Emperor Level with Two DFs, but also his Top 3 including Shiryu, Kuzan & Someone Else.
(It's totally possible if BB take over WG, then his Crew gain those Abyss Powers, after all Blackbeard is Darkness/Abyss Man himself, so it's possible They also gonna have Two DF Powers)
