I think that DF originally were known by another name, that it was changed to Devil Fruit by the WG for a few reasons:
Rebrand them as cursed fruit, something no regular person would want to eat. Instead, if they find one they can sell it to the WG for a ton of cash.
Fits in with the good is evil and evil is good propaganda pushed within the One Piece world
The Ancient Kingdom is believed to be the source of DF. Why would a kingdom associated with eutopia like technological advancement create something that manifests people's desires and hopes....then give it a sinister name like Devil Fruit?
I think originally there were power fruits that are now called Devil Fruits, they manifested peoples dreams, hopes and desires. Maybe Hope or Dream Fruit?
The 20 rulers did not like slaves/commoners gaining the ability to defend themselves using these powers, so this was the push they needed to join forces and go against a vastly superior enemy.
This brings us to Imus power...I believe Imu has the one and only real "Devil Fruit". Before destroying the creation that manifested the good fruits, Imu used it to create his own actual Devil Fruit that manifested a representation of peoples worst fears.
