Hi Worstgen,
I would like to make a statement about the author's use of the word, "magic." In the story, Eichiro Oda, through his own characters, has claimed that Devil Fruits aren't magic.
I would like to prove exactly why this is NOT true. Devil Fruits are, in fact, based on what modern science would consider magic.
Let's begin by determining what magic is by defining it. Magic is an element in a story that allows for the creation of something from nothingness. It is the ability to make things out of nothing or what would be considered nothing.
So, my point here is in how the belief system in this story works- it is based on such esoteric beliefs as Hinduism and Buddhism. Specifically, the Life Force Energy aspect of these ancient belief systems.
Point 1 - Life Force Energy Does Not Exist
Modern science has DISMISSED the concept of Life Force Energy as a scientific property. As far as modern science is concerned, Life Force Energy does NOT exist because it is based on the concept of subtle energy in general.
What is Subtle Energy?
- Subtle Energy is often considered to be like The Force in Star Wars. It flows through everything in the universe, but it is undetectable to scientific instruments. This is why it cannot be proven to exist.
Point 2 - By Permitting Life Force Energy in a Story Men Can Become Gods and This is Crazy
- The entire idea behind using a belief system in a story like this is to allow characters to get powerups until they become godlike beings. However, by insisting Devil Fruits are not based on magic, Eichiro Oda is insisting that the science which creates them is real but not fully understood. In other words, he is perpetuating PSEUDO-SCIENCE. Fake science. It's real, but only in the sense that it's based on crackpot theories which nobody in the scientific community respects.. but could possibly be true because it's impossible to prove.
Conqueror's Haki is based on the concept that in such belief systems like Hinduism a person can do whatever they want to if their will is strong enough. So, how the hell do we scale something like that? It's kind of like scaling how much someone can be a giant whiny baby....
Point 3 - This is a Story Made for People in the East
- It's not really normal for someone from the West to become very interested in a story like this simply because it's based on esoteric beliefs that originate from the East. It's also unpredictable for people in the West because they don't understand the belief system involved. They do enjoy the laser beams and high-speed action scenes, though.
