Disclaimer: ngl, I’m high as shit. And I might regret makin this theory trmw. But Devil Fruit Users sacrifice someone in exchange for their powers. Whether the sacrifice is latent or immediate. Lmk if u want me to take u outta the tags list.
My idea came from Berserk, when Griffith
I don’t know if this is also the case with One Piece. I’ll try to include characters that are well fleshed out. I won’t include characters we barely know much about, like certain Admirals, Commanders, etc etc. My idea is basically these special individuals are taken froM their lives after consuming the Fruit whether it be years or months in traumatic ways.
I’m probably reaching hard and it’s just plot. If it’s true, then Oda did this masterfully. Anyways if you guys have thoughts out em down below. Thanks for reading.

Sacrifices the entire band of the Hawks because he had the egg of the Conquerer Behelit, as well as the numerous other Apostles who earned their powers and sun-immortality via sacrificing a loved one or a group closest to them.

- Orochi - Had no one except Wano to sacrifice.
This theory originated from Orochi as a character ironically. He shares the same way he ate the fruit as Griffith was fed false memories by an old hag (just like Orochi) on how he needed to climb over bodies to attain what he wanted. For Orochi it was Shogunate, and Griffith it was King of his own Nation.
- CP9 Members - Had no one to sacrifice, but kill anyone in their way.

Jabra said that there is a myth that Devils reside inside of the Fruits. Could these Devils be responsible for the odd events that happen after fruit users gain their abilities? Didn't Luffy get kidnapped by a bandit the day he ate his fruit? The same day where his mentor lost his arm to save him? Chopper was attacked by Drum Kingdom citizens after he ate his. Baltigo was destroyed after Sabo got his devil fruit. Doffy also killed his father after Trebol gave him a gun and the Ito Ito no Mi. And Hancock and her sisters were fed fruits by the Celestial Dragons. Law watched Corazon die. (Etc).
