Now let's see what kind of haki did top tiers use against Marco:

Kizaru: Used yasakani no magatama a bunch of laser attacks that cannot be coated with haki.
Akainu: Magma fist a pure logia attack that cannot be coated with haki.
Big Mom: Prometheus someone who Big Mom never coated with haki.
Kaido: Boro Breath a fire attack that cannot be coated with haki.

When he fought a haki user like King then you know what happened.

I'm trying to find consistencies here. Thinking it back it kinda makes sense.

Marco was afraid of Perospero arrows because they're coated with haki.
Garp fist injured Marco because they're coated with haki.
King injured Marco because he constantly used haki.
