Does the story ever say that Blackbeard wants to become the king of the pirates? The only proof of that that I remember is him taking Law's poneglyphs,

He did say he also wanted to rule the world, so it's possible.

Becoming Pirate King is basically finding the One Piece, and Vegapunk said in the recent doublespread that “the fate of the world falls in the hands of the one that finds the One Piece”.

In short, whatever secret dream Teach and Luffy have beyond being PK, is essentially achieved only once they become Pirate King.

He wants to consume everything in existence as simple as that

Yes but just like Luffy he has an even greater ambition. The Pirate King title is just a stepping stone for either.

Blackbeard wants to be PK, and this is almost certainly a precursor to his true dream of wanting to be King of the World (same as Rocks, Auger’s quote to Saturn)
