I don't think Dragon's name was originally Dragon. I mean, think about it. We know Garp hates the Celestial Dragons, but, would the guy who hid Ace actually put a target on his own child's back by giving him a name sure to piss off the Celestial Dragons? Maybe, it's fucking Garp.
However, what if Dragon WAS a Marine, and was there on God Valley? He would have been around 17, I believe, considering he's 55, and God Valley took place around 38 years ago.
Imagine Dragon seeing the Celestial Dragons use their own slaves as meat shield, while watching Roger join forces with his father, Garp, to defeat Rocks. It would break a young man's concept of what the Marines were, and who they were supposed to protect.
The Celestial Dragons, Kaido, and Kaido's eventual Devil Fruit, which Big Mom gave to him on God Valley, are all connected to God Valley. Is it possible God Valley was a graveyard or dragons, and what Rocks was looking to steal, was Kaido's Fruit itself?
Either way, I don't think Dragon's name was originally Dragon. I believe he named himself that as a show of defiance to the WG and Celestial Dragons, and that we'll find out his name has great importance later on.
