Thank you for those who will be reading this. This is just my opinion and I thank you for your time.
Film RED (FR) was something that got me hype the first time I saw the trailer. The next second after watching this trailer, I shared the video link to my friend (A hardcore OP fan as well.). I was so excited that I could not wait for this movie to be released. I vow to avoid any additional trailer so that I could get the whole experience. If you have not realised, I used to a be huge fan of Shanks. I mean this guy was so likeable and in the OP world, he was this character that you would want to get along with.
What happened then? Well FR turns out to be a misleading movie. The title is Red, the logo even went as far as having the signature scar of Shanks, but in truth, this movie was just a huge promoting tool. As much as I wanted to avoid spoilers, I needed to see what this movie was about as I did not want to invest into something I might regret (Also, I had a bad experience with Stampede, which was promoted and saying the villain was a former crewmember of the Pirate King. ). So, I took some initiative and decided to look for information while trying to avoid spoilers. And so, I found out that the movie was about Uta. At this exact moment, I concluded that this movie was not about Shanks, so I decided that it was not worth it, and I allowed myself to be spoiled. I decided to watch the other trailers, suddenly it is revealed that Uta is Shanks’s daughter. But I felt something was shady, Shanks has a daughter, with whom and when. My interest was not gone at this point. But something was clear here, Uta was suddenly introduced in the OP world and her DF was music. Then, in the manga (I was an active manga reader), suddenly Uta was forced to be canon and Shanks was used at the end of Wano to promote FR and GB was used as a mere hype tool.
Oda’s promised that Shanks would made a move, but never would I have expected him to use Shanks as a tool to promote a movie.
Uta is a character that I could have love but there were so many shady things going on that it made me loathe her. I hate that I loathe Uta because I love her design and her voice. If this movie was labelled under another name , I could have appreciated this movie more but since it was so contrived, Uta being Shanks’s adopted daughter and the movie she featured in is called FR, I cannot bring myself to like her.
Now let discussed about the main point, FR what could it have been?
The first time I saw the trailer, I imagine a movie about Shank’s past, his rise to power, his fights and struggles to make a name for himself in the new world and get over the label of being just a crewmate in the Pirate king ship. This was my thought when I saw that trailer that day, even thought it was talking about some woman with the voice that could change the world. (When I saw this first trailer, I felt something was slightly off, and I was right as the movie made a complete 360.)
After decades, we know nothing about Shanks. This movie could have been a great one, if not one of the best OP movie. But the directors were lazy and were thinking about cheap way of making money. This movie could have explored Shanks as he builds his crew, fights Mihawk and later BB. Instead, we got some notes about Shanks’s abilities. (So anticlimactic) Instead of displaying these abilities as we watch a young inexperienced Shanks developing into a competent captain.
The movie could have started with a young Shanks as he started his crew. (In the timeline, it is just after Roger’s Death and his fight with Buggy.). In this case, we explored these young characters as they are not experienced. We all know that Shanks does not appear a lot in the manga. But here it was such a wasted potential from the directors.
In this movie, we could have explored each crew member of Shanks and Shanks himself as they rose together and struggled together. Since this is an inexperienced captain Shanks, we will not be spoiled of his abilities in the current manga and first of all, it is in the past so it will add to the character. We will be able to see what Shanks can do and base on that we can think about his capabilities in the current timeline. It is also a great opportunity to emphasize that Shanks is actually left-handed, adding more weight to the fact that he will lose his left arm. All the writers and directors have to do were to be smart with the movie concept.
As we all know, Shanks have an history with Mihawk in the Grand line. In this movie, this is a point that could have been explored during the first act after we have gotten familiar with Shanks’s crewmates. This will be one of Shanks’s challenge as a captain. Does Shanks have the strength to protect his crewmate? Mihawk could also have been the catalyst into Shanks creating a name for himself. At some point in the story, the warlord system was established and one day, Shanks had to face Mihawk. Mihawk was hunting pirate and was known to never let any pirate alive. This is there that their rivalry developed into some kind of respect for each other and friendship.
Since Mihawk is alone, Shanks is forced to duel him. It was at this moment that we could have a fight of a young Mihawk and a young Shank. Both clashed a lot in the Grand line and at the same time both refining their sword skills. Mihawk and Shanks would have this Roger-Garp relationship. And anywhere Shanks goes, Mihawk will find Shanks. Mihawk is relentless and will pursue Shanks no matter what. So much for Shanks that he has to develop a way to kill observation Haki. In this movie, it could be shown that Mihawk is very experienced observation Haki user and has the ability to see in the future as well. Shanks would struggle initially as Mihawk is on another level but as they fight, they made each other stronger. Even inexperience, Shanks is a powerful Conqueror Haki user, and his CoC coating is incredible so much that Mihawk have to develop his observation Haki as well and also his armament Haki, until his sword reached a status of black blade. At one point, these guys were so strong and each of their confrontations ended in a tight where both are on the verge of death. They decided to ceasefire, as it would be more advantageous for them. At this point of the story, Shanks made a friend that he could trust as his crewmate. Even they are not at each other throat anymore, they would still have daily duels in the Grand line.
At some point, Shanks has finally made it to the New World, and we get to see how emotional to be here again. We see further of the adventures of Shanks as he starts to conquer some small islands in the new world and making his name. It did not take long before he got his bounty which is 1 billion. Mihawk sometimes pay Shanks a visit, where they have a little friendly duel and then followed by a night of heavy drinking.
As Shanks grows stronger he started to get attention of other pirates, especially Whitebeard. In one of his adventure, Shanks had to face one of the Whitebeard pirates. At this point of time, both parties were competing for an island with enormous resources. That day, Shanks faced one of the Whitebeard ship for the first time after decades and with his newly acquired crew. It is at this moment that the Red Hair Pirates will be challenged as crew; do they have what it takes to be considered a pirate crew worthy of conquering the New World?
This enormous Whitebeard ship is supposed to be under the command of Second Commander, and it contains Teach as a crewmember. Shanks knew that this day would come, that he will have to face the Whitebeard pirates, he has passively gathered information on each commander and their ship. Shanks immediately recognised Teach as he met him a long time ago (Shanks had a feeling of deja vu). Shanks mentioned that this is Teach and that he was one of the young crewmember of WB. A crewmember that never sleeps. As Shanks is looking through WB’s files, he is surprised that Teach did not have a bounty after all these years under WB. If he had not seen Teach today, he would have thought Teach have died at sea and forgotten. Beckman even commented that Teach is not even a commander, he is even not part of the commanders nor a commanding officer, just a mere crewmate. As the two parties are fighting, it is clear that these Whitebeard pirates were more experienced in fighting at sea and better equipped. This forced Shanks and the others to settle this on the island. To compensate for the lack of commander, this particular ship is composed of hundreds of crewmate (around 500), experienced fighters with some high level of Haki mastery. Even Shanks commented that CoC will not be effective here and that it will not be an easy fight. They cannot retreat either as this ship is equipped with highly advanced Cannon, something noticed by Yasopp. It will just make them easier target to be sniped from afar. They would have to fight with all their strength and repel the enemies. The battle between the Red hair pirates and the Whitebeard pirates started. With Shanks having around 9 commanders and 25 crewmates (competent Haki users), while the Whitebeard pirates being more than hundreds . However, Shanks at this point was already known worldwide to have a balance crew.
Shanks fought with ruthlessness and speed, so does his crew. They intend to show how fearsome they are and, in an attempt, to intimidate their enemies. As such, if they are not killing, they are leaving the enemies maimed. They have to leave some alive, as dead men tell no tales. After having felled more than a hundred Whitebeard pirates, Shanks realized that something is off. As he saw two of his recently promoted commanders struggling against one Whitebeard crewmember. As Shanks fights his way to their location, he is faced with Teach. Shanks ordered his two commanders to retreat, he will handle Teach. He ordered them to focus on protecting the ship. As Shanks approaches Teach, Teach is laughing as it has been a long time. Shanks is surprised as this two commanders were pretty strong, though inexperienced. Shanks explained that he is surprised that Teach is not a commander to which Teach replied that he has no such ambition. He is here to get this island under the command of his father and explained to Shanks the seriousness of his actions. Teach explained that Shanks is directly challenging Whitebeard and if he is ready to face the consequences. Shanks just smile with a confidence look and Teach just explained very well, he understood that Shanks already made his mind.
As Shanks is fighting Teach, it is clear that Teach is on another level. At this point of his journey, he has faced many enemies, but something is not normal with Teach. As he is fighting, Teach is becoming more and more unpredictable with his attacks. It is clear that Teach is hiding his true strength and is not just a mere crewmate. Shanks is not able to rely on his observation Haki to judge the true strength of Teach. (It is clear that Teach is a master at hiding his strength, since he has to keep this masquerade as he is always close to the strongest Man Alive, WB. It is no surprise that Shanks will struggle to read Teach. ) As the fight goes on, a day has already passed. Shanks is keeping his guard to the maximum, however, Teach suddenly strike Shanks giving him this famous scars. Teach laughs as Shanks has managed to dodge most of his attack. Teach was aiming for Shanks’s eyes. Teach is clearly a threat and it was wise to send his commanders away as he would have lost two valuable crewmates if he was not careful or has wasted time. Teach is a master of deception.
So far, Shanks have managed to land some attacks and to injure Teach. Shanks realized that the pain tolerance of Teach is abnormal, he just took two directs Haki imbued sword to his body, but he just shrugged off these attacks as if it was nothing. In a bubble thought, Shanks is thinking, did Teach trained himself to withstand extremely high amount of damage? Also, he has noticed that the endurance of Teach is abnormal as well. Teach is just slightly tired. Shanks also concluded that Teach did not possessed any Devil Fruit as his claws are made completely of Seastone. Where did he get those weapons? Teach is clearly above a commander in terms of fighting skills and he is even equipped with weapons to face DF users, on top of being an experience Haki user. It is clear Teach does not take planning slightly. In thought, Shanks explained even with his observation Haki, he is barely able to dodge the attacks from Teach and if he hesitates for 1 second, he is guaranteed to get hit. There is no possibility of error with this guy and his strength is abnormal. He is forced to dodge at this point. It is shown at one point that Shanks tried to block an attack from Teach, but he got send way few metres and he took some damage from blocking the attack of Teach. At this point, Shanks is mostly relying on dodging and counterattacking . In fact, it was after a counterattack, that he managed to land two heavy attacks on Teach, however the guy took it as if it was nothing and continued to fight without faltering.
After one day of fighting, most of Whitebeard pirates had been decimated, leaving only 50 crewmembers heavily injured. Shanks lost his 25 crewmates in the process but his commanders, even though they were heavily injured and worn out, managed to repel the remaining Whitebeard pirates. The 50 WB crewmembers shouted retreat, to which Teach congratulated Shanks. Compare to Shanks who has 25 causalities, the Whitebeard pirates have lost 449 skilled fighters and Haki users. It is obvious that the Whitebeard pirates have lost more resources in this confrontation. And It is clear if this fight continues, it will not bring further advantage to the Whitebeard pirates. As Teach is explaining, we can see the commanders of Shanks slowly approaching. Teach and Shanks who at this point was in a standstill, Teach decided to leave. Shanks is wounded and during this whole confrontation he was forced to fight with one eye closed. Even though he did not lose his eye, he could not open it as it was covered with blood. On that day, the Red hair pirates have won.
The next day, it was official, Shanks was declared as one of the contender to be an emperor of the sea. With this victory, Whitebeard is forced to acknowledge Shanks and to leave this island to Shanks. In a small scene, we could have Whitebeard smiling. The bounty of Shanks is also heavily increase but we do not see anything, as when his commanders are impressed at Shanks’s new bounty, Shanks seems to be absent and did not seem to be interested in his bounty. We can see the disgust on Shanks’s face as he is burying his 25 crewmates. It is a reality checked, and after all this years, this pill is always difficult to swallow. It is clear that the sea is not some paradise. He also looked at the hundreds of WB pirates corpses left after their fight. On that day, Shanks’s territory and reputation have increased, and this island is now under his protection.
As Shanks is traveling to East blue. He wants to keep a low profile for now. As much as he has won this fight, it was too close. He may have the strength, a balance crew but he realized that he needs to also think about number. They were almost overwhelmed by numbers. So, as he is resting in East blue, he will also think on increasing his numbers and creating fleets.
On there way to East Blue, the Red hair pirates encountered unexpectedly a marine fleet. They are forced to attack this marine fleet. They manage to secure a devil fruit in the process. Since, Devil Fruits are expensive, they will try to sell this later. And so, Shanks went to East Blue , where is lost his arm. When Shanks returned to the new world, everyone is shocked by the news of Shank losing an arm after his journey from East Blue. The next day, Shanks is visited by Mihawk. As the two discussed, Shanks brought Luffy to the conversation. Later, Shanks proposed Mihawk a little friendly duel to put some spice to their reunion, but Mihawk aggressively declined. To which Shanks laughed at. Both then decided to have drink, with Shanks pouring alcohol in a mug for Mihawk. We got these two drinking as the screen fades to black.
The end.
