In this video it's explained that Garling being called the former king of god valley was a mistranslation, and that the specific kanji used actually means "Champion" who once thrived in the land known as God Valley.
It was translated at "Ou" (King) but it was actually "Ou Ja" (Champion), and this actually refers to the "Victor of the competition". We later learn that Garling was the winner of the competition which involved killing indigenous men, women and children for points.
In other words his title at God Valley shows he's just good at killing people that can't fight back, he's the best at it in fact. These weren't even pirates, and you know the whole speech shanks gave about if you're going to use a weapon and draw it you should be prepared to die, yada, yada.
I don't wanna see people talk about "OhHhH gArlinG dOeSn'T cOunt BeCauSe He LiVes iN hEavEN AbOVe eArTH sO hE'S StROnGER thAN MihAWK" nah, this dudes title in his prime is fraudulent, and it shows you can't get a black blade just killing fodder all day, maybe if garling took to the seas and fought relentlessly like Mihawk, but nah he wanted to be the best in his little valley competitions instead.
Even if people think garling is busted now with his physicality being in it's prime thanks to becoming a gorosei, and attaining a zoan type power because of it, I am downscaling his base strength to "proficient fodder killer" level, so maybe something cavendish could pull off.
