In case you didn't know, Oda recently shared the sketch names he considered for Garling, before ultimately choosing his current one.
I found this trivia quite interesting and gave some thoughts to each of the names listed. I'm sharing them here:
  • Garland --> If the order means something, this might have been the early first choice. Oda might've changed his mind and made it the House name, Figarland, shared with Shanks and Shamrock. Even in his final name, Garling, Garland has survived even if in an altered form.
  • Castra --> Literal latin word for the military camps of the roman legions. Might suggest, once again, that part of the inspiration for the Celestial Dragons is the Roman Empire and the bad traits of his society (see House names like Nerona and Marcus). It also fits with Garling's martial introduction as Supreme Commander of the God Knights and Judge of the Celestial Dragons. In another source, I saw this one alternatively translated as Gastow (?).
  • Denham --> This one I found odd in the bunch, really couldn't find major meanings or implications in it. Maybe the suffix -ham could suggest a degree of noble heritage, similar to Killingham?
  • Surridge --> Similar to Denham, is open to interpretations. But the initial S could fit as a pattern of family initials (like Shanks and Shamrock). Ridge suggests elevation, proper for a Celestial status both in terms of nobility (higher bloodline) and settlement (the top of the Red Line).
  • Eichbeth --> Very peculiar, imo. Immediately makes me think of Shakespeare's tragic character, Macbeth, the General that killed the King and seized the throne. Possibly a very subtle hint at Garling's intentions?
What do you think?
Do you have more thoughts on these names?
And leaving Garling aside, which one of these names would have fit him best in your opinion?
