TLDR: Giants are mutated Buccaneers and the buccaneer ability is the ability to adapt.
1. Background information
With it still being break week, and discussion on this forum being mostly bait I figured may as well start one on a topic I’ve been thinking about recently and is currently important to the plot; buccaneers and giants.
Now what we know about the two:
1. Buccaneers are said to have giants blood according to Ivankov
2. Both worship the same god in the form of the Sun God Nika
Oda has been forthcoming with creating a connection between the two races; however, we’re seemingly led to believe it’s because Buccaneers are some sort of hybrid between Giants and Humans. However, I think there’s a strong chance this isn’t the case.
The reason that I believe this may be the case is due to the forests of Elbaf. A massive forest with massive animals in it similar to the size of the gorosei. We don’t know why everything in Elbaf is so big; however, there is another giant forest in the verse that it can be compared to. The forests on Upper Yard.
2. How could Buccaneers turn into Giants
As we all know, Upper Yard was once the same as Jayas Forest with the same flora and fauna; however, in Upper Yard everything’s magnitudes bigger including the animals. We’re not given a reason for this; however, judging by how impactful the symbolism of the sun is to the world; I believe the answer is the direct Sunlight caused the plants to grow. This also gave the South Birds the freedom of the endless open sky above them and they chose to grow as well.
This idea of sunlight causing the growth of plants and animals having the freedom to grow to match connects to Elbaf due to their beliefs. Not only does Elbaf pray to the Sun God Nika who is a god of freedom; but their most known holiday is a celebration of thanks to the Sun itself for the year’s sunlight and this is the key to how the giant race was born.
Now how can animals just adapt like this and if buccaneers evolved to giants like them; why didn’t the shandians change? To explain my thought process, we know that animals have shown this unique ability in canon. Back in Long Ring Long Land Tonjit explains that the animals here stretched long because of the freedom to do so due to the long prairies found in the land. As such this phenomenon of Animals freely changing themselves to adapt to their land is documented in the verse. And as for the other question; this is because of the unique ability of the buccaneers. My belief is that the buccaneer ability is that if they have the will; their body, namely their lineage factor will adapt itself to allow that will a reality. And that the giants were born because Buccaneers kept growing because of their desire and love for the sun let them physically grow closer to it by turning them into giants.

The best way to describe the Buccaneer Power is the Power of Absolute Freedom. If they have enough will; anything is possible. This is best explained looking at Kuma who arrived to Egghead for no logical reason. No one asked him to come; no one called him; but he arrived none the less even after his body was shut down.
This is because even after everything was taken from him; his love for Bonney gave him the power to enhance the supersonic hearing he has to hear her screaming on egghead when she was swarmed by bugs and the will to resist the self destruction and go to her on egghead.
This is what I mean by Absolute Freedom. Kuma heard his daughter in trouble and through that love he gained the will to disregard his body’s limitations to go and help her.
Scientifically; the way I believe this works is through the exact same way that Nika is free, elasticity. The buccaneer body is strong and stable; but I believe that the lineage factor of this race may not be. It can be stretched and changed and still snap back into shape which gives them their unique ability to change.
This relates back to one other character who people predict may be a Buccaneer; Marshall D. Teach. People cannot eat multiple devil fruits; this was an accepted fact in the world until we saw Blackbeard gain Whitebeards power. The reason I believe people cannot eat multiple fruits is because as we know by eating one fruit; the users lineage factor changes to give them the fruit power. However, most people’s lineage factors can’t handle multiple changes. Not like a Buccaneers who can handle it as long as the Buccaneer has the will. Someone like Blackbeard fits this perfectly. He wanted the strength of Whitebeard, he was going to do anything to make that happen, and his body allowed it.
This power is why the Buccaneers have gone near extinct; they’ve either evolved to a next race of being like the giants; or they were hunted due to fear of this power.
