Speculations Harald was a Roger-era pirate warlord

The gorosei said elbaf could join the WG if they killed Rocks. However from what we know of God Valley, it was Roger and Garp that defeated Rocks. Maybe Garling might have killed him, as he’s the champion of GV. But nothing suggests Harald was even at GV.

So how did Harald eventually get invited to Mariejois, where he met Shanks?

My theory, he was a Shichibukai. He already showed he was willing to fight pirates on behalf of the WG when he fought Rocks. Yet the WG don’t trust him enough to let him actually join the WG in full.

Being a warlord seems like a sort of a middle ground. You are technically a WG asset, but not completely. This perfectly fits Harald.

My guess is after Harald failed to kill Rocks, the gorosei offered him the role of warlord. He took it, hoping to use it to advance Elbaf’s cause. But the WG kept using him to cause more and more destruction. Until eventually Harald decided he wanted out. He ripped his horns out and resigned. His rejection of the WG being what eventually led to him being Domi reversi’d and killed by Loki.

Overall while we have seen Roger era marines and pirates, we are yet to see a Roger era warlord. I feel like Harald would be a prime candidate for this. And it explains what he was doing between God Valley and when he visited MJ post Roger’s death.

Yeah, that's why Elbaf never joined the WG

Diplomatic reasons? Elbaf is a pretty big country, and there could have been a meeting with the government about anything, Trade, Giants in the Marines, etc. Or maybe he snuck in?

You do realize that warlords are pirates, right? Harald isn't a pirate

Kuma was barely a pirate.

ultimately the WG just needed Harald to be their dog. Egging him along with warlord status is in line with how they treated him prior. It would also explain why he ultimately ripped his horns out to denounce his ancient giant lineage.
