Welcome back guys to another Higurashi comparison, where I make an in depth look of When they cry Vs. Gou!
This time I’m covering satakos arc, and I'll be discussing which anime I feel adapted this chapter better!

First of all, this comparison will be a little different from the previous ones, because Gou had a major divergence early on unlike the previous arcs. Instead of adapting the original question arc and shifting gears later on. Gou flat out skips the question arc and follows the answer arc. So, I'm mainly going to be comparing both answer arcs of when they cry vs Gou’s version, but I will still bring up satakos question arc when needed.

Now let’s dive in shall we!

Starting off with Gou, we already have our first major change; Rinas corpse is not discovered in the beginning like in When They Cry. So, I'm assuming Rina survives this arc, considering she doesn't show up at all later on in the story.
Then were introduced to Satakos uncle Teppei. They don’t hold back in showing how much of a scumbag he is, with him scaring off the poor landlord. And we get a look at how disgusting his living environment is, already hinting at satakos abuse.
Then we shift gears to an original SOL moment that wasn’t in the original. So, were wasting time already huh? Next, we return back to keiichis house, and find out is parents are out as usual. Then satako and Reka show up to help him cook, because apparently, he’s incompetent enough to almost burn the house down...
This entire scene is near 1:1 with When they Crys version, so I have no grievances here.

Moving on, In the next scene we get another original scene of Keiichi and Satako shopping, and once they return home Satako offers to cook for Keiichi every day until his parents return home, only for them to call announcing they’re coming home early.
This is a completely new scene in Gou, and I like this addition because it hints at Satakos loneliness and how she wishes for Keiichi to be her new big brother.

Then in the next scene Keiichi gets called to baseball game with his pals, where we meet the creepy coach Irei. Then we get our next major change with Shion. Shion is actually nice to satako in this arc and doesn’t freak out when Keiichi ask her about satoshi. So, it seems like she’s sane this arc at least. Same with Rena in the next scene, when Keiichi ask mion and rena about satoshi; Rena doesn’t freak out about Oyashio's curse.

So, it seems like everyone is relatively sane in this arc so far. However, I prefer WTC’s version so far because Gou cut out a necessary scene displaying rena’s character.
Overall, GOU and WTC are pretty similar so far.
Moving on to episode 10, We begin with a vision of Keiichi killing Teppi, so I'm assuming Keiichi is going to try to avoid the same fate as his WTC predecessor.
And the next couple of scenes are 1:1 so I'm going to skip over these.
For our first major change, Gou removes the scene of Reka breaking down in tears, at the fact Takano won't mobilize the yamainu to help satako. On one hand, this change sucks because this scene highlighted how desperate and mentally drained Reka was. However, Gou has barely given Takano screen time, nor has it mentioned the yamainu yet, so I'll let it slide.

Also, the Hanyuu scene was excluded as well, but since Hanyuu has been omitted from Gou, I won't be covering it.
Also, Gou cuts out the scene of Irei taking Satako back home, where we first see the real occurrence of abuse from teppei with Satakos bruises. This is a very confusing direction, because throughout the entirety of Gou, we never once see any bruisers on satako.
Instead, they show us an original scene of the club discussing satakos unfortunate situation. I’m not a big fan of this change, because instead of showing us the abuse Satako is going through, they hit us with an expedition dump.

The next scene is pretty 1:1 for the most part, except Gou switches the follow up scene of the teacher with Satako coming back to school.
However, in the next scene Rena doesn't have her flashback of her battle with keiichi, and mion doesn’t try to stop shion from hitting keiichi.

So, it seems like Keiichi is the only one that has flash backs this time. Also, the principle doesn’t show up to express his support for their protest. And Reka doesn’t reveal that Shion was the one supposed to kill Teppei this time.

Then Gou cuts out 2 scenes; one, were the group reveals that satako refused help from the CPS because she believed Satoshi would return and save the day. And, the scene where keiichi gets advice from his dad.
The first change is pretty major because that scene was important in revealing Satakos mental state, and why her situation is so difficult.
And the next scene is nigh 1:1 except for Gou excluding the scene where shion revealed that the old hag is the reason, satakos family is hated.

The next scene is very similar as well with Keiichi recruiting fellow students, but the principle and teacher is excluded from the first meeting.
However, we get our next major change with Gou changing Ooishi’s support for Keiichis protest. In Gou, He tells Keiichi to stop the protest and even considers using violence to break up the protestors. Unlike in WTC, where Ooishi supported Keiichi and warned him about the sonozaki family.
So, it seems like Ooishi might have been affected by the oyashiro curse this time?

Then in the next scenes are basically 1:1 with the protesters getting turned down again and the club asking the sonozaki family for support.
However, Gou removed the scene where Satako shows back up to school to act like she’s fine, only for her to break down after keiichi and everyone told her that they will save her, and Reka revealing that Satako is forced to return to her uncle's home, because Teppei threatens to burn down Satoshis room.
This is unfortunate, because these scenes are pivotal in expressing Satakos tragic character. And it seems like Gou barely wants to show the abuse Satako is going through for some reason.

And finally, for the most major changes!
Keiichi heads down to satakos house with satako, only for it to be revealed that Teppei is still there. Then he attacks Keiichi, and Keiichi kills him with his last bit of strength. However, if you look at teppeis eyes, they’re bright red, hinting that Keiichi could be hallucinating.
So most likely, Keiichi has been infected by the oyashiro curse and it could be a whole another person all together, possibly satoshi?
Then Keiichi surprisingly survives, this is the third time Keiichi has survived, unlike in WTC where he died almost every arc.
And then we learn that Ooishi apparently shot up the shrine festival, WTF IS GOING ON ANYMORE?!?!?

And that’s all for my comparisons this week guys. Overall, I heavily prefer the way the 2006 anime handled Satakos arc. First of all, I don’t like that Gou skipped her question arc, and it failed at its execution in the protesting arc.
I feel like Gou wants to appeal to old viewers and new viewers at the same time, but the writers keep half assing the execution. Either stick to the original timeline, or create new events.
I’m sorry but Gou kind of sucks right now. Hopefully it gets better, but as of now the 2006 version is WAAAAAY better!
